I've been playing AP Ezreal mid for a few months now (back before pros picked him AD mid and brought the masses). While I agree he doesn't have CC, how does that make him different from an assassin?
Honestly, AP Ezreal feels like a more team fight oriented assassin. His abilities come up fast enough that you can keep throwing them into the fight, and your best damage (W and R) can hit multiple targets. Mobility is in very high demand, and he has it.
I think your biggest problem is the wannabe pros out there. Give them time, they'll go away.
