How do melee mages fare with the new mage items?

I can't really see an item that really favours them. Zhonya's is still the to-go defense armor item despite its cost, Athene's is being pushed as a support mage item (which i actually wouldn't mind if it had an active shield or something). Or am I missing something? Granted, Abyssal has a slight increase in MR but still...

Is the intent to make Frozen Heart worth picking up with Archangel staff? Because it seems like a complicated build just for some defense ( Health, Armor, MR, AP, CD)
