having impact on the game as a mage

Hi! I'm a newbie silver 5. I play mostly hybrid damage -utility mages in the midlane and support (Lux, orianna, morgana, sona , nami..). This season I struggle way more in being incisive in my games. When I win lane I often end up loosing the game and when I win the game I often don't feel at all like the victory was my doing. In general I feel like AP champions have a way lesser impact than ADs (even looking enemy teams), aside from their cc and peeling capabilities.. But even those are instruments to allow your own AD to be better. Damage wise all my burst is useless when ads get guardian angel, let alone if they throw a maw/mercurial/eon/dd in their build. I'd like some advice on how to be more effective individually on my favorite champions.. Or should I just switch role/champions to feel more agency in my game? I've happened to loose games when I was 20/3 and I was feeling like I was completely powerless. I don't mind having to teamwork but in an elo when your average ally is generally not able to perform even basic actions it can be really frustrating, especially when I don't feel able to punish properly the enemy team for the same thing without follow up.

If you win lane you've got to use your advantage to help the rest of the map towards the end of laning and during mid-game. You've got to take the initiative and keep pushing your advantage and asserting control of the map after you win lane.

Warding and pinging for allies when ganks are coming helps a lot.

Ganking for teammates is good too.

These might help you to feel more impactful in your games.

I have been going decent with Xerath, in part because his ultimate lets you contribute to plays happening across the map. But I also understand where you're coming from, there have been several times when I've considered becoming a split pushing top lane main because at least then there will be someone on the team attacking towers.

I don't know, I feel its the opposite.

Mages are absolute gods compared to AD champs. They can win all lane match ups (in Silver), when they do they just destroy people in team fights either from a distance with safe and OP AOE nukes or 100-0 delete key targets up close.

Unlike with AD mid champs, you don't have to win lane to be relevant. You simply scale into a powerful late game; the game just has to get to the point where you've farmed 2 to 3 items.

If your team is behind, you can still contribute by standing far back and firing off "artillery" AOE rounds at the enemy to wave clear and poke them down (this is not an option on AD mids like Zed, Talon, or Yasuo for example).

If you are ahead, you can close out the game by relentlessly bombarding them with AOE from a distance or hiding, and then coming out to flank and kill off key targets with burst. At 2-3 items, a lot of mages have more burst than even assassins (the supposed trade-off is that unlike assassins, they can't get in and then get out, but who cares, so long as you delete 2 people with you).

AP champs have the most impact in games after jungler. You gotta roam and help your team or in team fights use your AoE abilities to get high damage onto as much of the enemy team as possible. I main Ziggs in Plat 2, even though Ziggs is a later game champ I still win 59% of my games on him with over a 3 kda because I can freeze 2 lanes with him at once, stabilize a game, and farm so quickly that even with lower amounts of kills I can still do lots of damage, plus Ziggs can demolish towers extremely easily. Mages have a huge impact in games, you just aren't using your's properly.
