How do I win mid lane as melee against ranged?

Merksquad1234·10/14/2018, 3:54:53 PM·6 votes·5,950 views

I normally play adc so I'm used to being a ranged champ but when I go mid I like to play champs such as ekko, fizz or talon and I find it really hard to cs without taking a lot of harass and stuff especially against champs such as oriana and annie. Are there any general tips on what to do to win these match ups?

Play defensively and accept that you fall behind in CS early on, just make sure you get the xp. Pick up solid sustain, Fleetfoodwork is a great rune on those champs vs ranged, the sustain is huge and the ms helps to get back out of range after hitting a minion and also helps in trades. Going for inspiration second and picking up biscuits and the longer pot duration can help aswell.

For starting items, flask usually is you're friend, longsword+pots also is fine on ADs.

Play around your powerspikes and around enemie CDs. Talon and ekko for example have strong lvl 2s. If they hit both parts of thier Q(W for talon), you're opponent needs to stay out of your gapcloseing range or you can chunk them really hard thx to their passives, which gives you a window to pick up CS while zoneing them. Ranged champs have nasty harras, but you usually have the upper hand in an all-in, use that to your advantage. Also, most mages rely on some skillshots, and most asassins have mobillity, so try to hold onto your mobillity till they use that skillshot and dodge it agressively(aka dodge while closeing the gap). For talon, it's important to keep in mind that his Q has a partial reset on lasthit, so try to use it on a low hp minion to dodge stuff so you can use it soon again for the counterattack while you're opponent still has CDs.

But mostly, especially if you're not that experienced on them, try to just soak xp and scrap as much cs as you can while staying save till lvl 6, past that you will have alot all-in kill potential(or alot more savety in case of ekko) Also, getting more waveclear can help alot. Even though it's not that common, i really like rushing luden's ecco on ekko, allows you to basically spam that Q and clear waves from a save distance, allowing you to roam. On Talon, you want to rush Tiamat, it's active if used right gives you probably even more burst than any other item at that point, and it allows you to clear waves quickly so you spent as little time as possible in range for harras befor you can either roam or retreat.

If you're new to those champs, it's really though, but once you get a feel for when you can trade back, it gets a lot easier. Their main tool at dealing with poke is threatening with strong all ins so the opponent has to think tice if he wants to get in range. However, it's important to keep an eye on the enemie jungle, if you go for a trade as melee, you open your self up for ganks by useing you escape tool agressively.

  1. Learn how to control the minion wave. There are plenty of tutorials out there for both ranged and melee in all lanes.
  2. Hold minion wave in a good spot. Ex. Right outside of your turret range.

Just be defensive and hold the lane. It may seem bad, but you just keeping your lane secure and not dying rather than pushing does the whole team so much more than you possibly winning your own lane. Once your team has another lane won or jungle control, they will help you more and you will start winning lane. Stay calm and have fun.

Keep your eyes on cool downs for their abilities. If key abilities like CC (Lux Q, Zoe E, etc) are down, you’re open to trade with them and if it goes well, you’ll have more kill pressure and they’ll have to farm safely. Either farm with your ranged ability or zone them off with it.

For Talon, throw W to zone them off. If they get hit twice, you have kill pressure and can farm all you want.

However, if you’re getting hard poked, freeze lane at turret and farm until you get Tiamat. Then hard push lane and roam.

Side step the minion wave and use your poke tools to trade the enemy and always keep an eye out for theirs, be unpredictable and farm as much as you can.

Usually your level 3 and 6 all-ins are devastating on those characters (especially if with ignite added) and remember to roam when you can.

First, accept that you cannot outright defeat your opposition directly.

With that out of the way, you're looking to do something I like to call "wasting their magazines/ammo". Figure out what ability it is that you need to bait out so that you can get something happening. If they aren't willing to put it on cooldown, contest terrain near them as they try to last hit. Also, try to last hit when they last hit.

Look for early early roaming potential. Since you're going behind on CS vs that type of matchup anyway, you may as well ward around high traffic areas and try to catch a pick through the vision game.

If you cannot win through physical force, win through attrition.

Pressure and overload lanes when you have the time available. Call out mia's and then roam. It's easy to want to stay and collect farm, but hold off on that for now. Farm will be worth more gold later on, and what farm you will get later will be more valuable to you ontop of whatever kills/assists you have from roaming (you might even incidentally take out your enemy mid laner).

Build against your opposition!

If you are playing Zed Zed , and your enemy middle lane is using Leblanc Leblanc, you know that she has a combo that will 100% kill you at level 6 before you can get your full combo out and be able to proc your passive, but you also know that Kai'sa Kaisa may roam up to attack you because you are Zed Zed , then you know that rushing Maw of Malmortius item 3156 is a safer way to start out your build and will allow you to mitigate most of the damage that Leblanc Leblanc will shell out while negating the additional magic damage from Kai'sa's Kaisa Guinsoo's Rageblade item 3124 passive effect.

All in all, it's about respect.

Not the enemy player's skill, but the enemy champion's kit! Respect the kit's strengths, and abuse its weaknesses. Bait lengthy cooldowns on abilities, then abuse their downtime. Get into their minds. Don't let them feel like their CS is free, even if they outrange you by a ton like Caitlyn Caitlyn. You know which CS is easiest for you to get at. But every CS they miss due to deciding to attack you is a loss of gold they cannot get back through farming alone. Then remember that you can catch back up to par by roaming and taking team objectives and using dirty outplays.

Good luck!

Depends on your champ but against mages its mostly about keeping the wave in the middle of the lane, having some way of healing yourself (Doran shield, lifesteal, etc) and punishing them with an all-in when they use their CC spell.

You can get a kill at lvl 2 as bruiser Taric vs Lux if you do that properly.

TLDR: Play safe and win by abusing the mistakes of your enemy.

Just do an all In , As Talon , all in them at lvl 2 , chunk most of their hp , and then you will be the one to zone them out of the waves , because if they get to your range , they will die

As for Fizz , preferable all in at lvl 3 , you can do it earlier but it will be a little hard , and remember as Fizz , you can sacrifice some of your cs , but at the end at lvl 6 , you will all in and kill them

usually you have to try and bait out cd and than go in at the last minute for cs. Also occasionally going in and doing a strong trade during these cd down times is a good way to assert dominance over a lane

This is my favorite YouTube channel for learning how to tryhard: https://www.youtube.com/user/SkillCappedDotNet/videos They make concise, yet thorough, analytical videos on early game strategies and game plans.

Here's a couple videos from them on how to play melee vs ranged: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEq3nHXq49Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNWZnCuCT-E The level 1 wave management parts of their videos have helped me immensely

And here's a video on what your enemies could possibly want to do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhALMCGyGPc

Also some tidbits that I'm not sure these videos mention: When the enemies blow their high-damage or cc abilities on the wave, that's your opportunity to go for a trade. If you're against someone like Ahri, who never uses their cc to cs, you'll want to try to bait out her charm by faking a last-hit.
