Confused, looking for clarification

Ok, this season unlike the last 2 - I actually did some research, learned to play a few different lanes - and improved my performance in my primary role. I decided to take promo's slowly and only play when I wasn't tilted.

I get through promos, and it says "Congratulations, you have been promoted to Bronze 5".

Now I wasn't expecting much more then that, so don't get me confused, but I did expect at least a bronze 3 or 4. I did go 7-3 in my promos with S or A's in all of my wins (and 1 of my losses), and still got placed into the lowest tier of bronze. So I am wondering - whats the point of the promotion series for returning players? I assume that even if I went 10-0, I would still be bronze 5 because that's where I ended up at the end of season 5. So basically I just wasted 10 matches worth of LP to be placed where I figured I was going to end up, with 0 LP.

The clarification needed is: Does our last seasons placement have that much of an impact on the next season? For returning players who don't have gold+ friends to boost their elo, Is there any way during promo's to get lifted out of your previous seasons tier or is it just 10 matches you have to play?

I feel kind of deflated going through all of that trouble to ensure I leave promos with a decent match history so I can be placed a bit higher in bronze so the climb out isn't as far, only to be congratulated on being placed in the lowest possible tier.

You always get dropped a long ways from where you ended. (Usually aimed at higher elos but hits everyone) on my main, I ended gold 3, even though I was 1 win away from Plat at one point. RIP. But after going 5-5 in my provisional matches, I had to start in Silver 5, I got back to gold 5 already but yeah, MASSIVE drops for everyone

It places you based on last season's ranking, and if you were in the depth of Bronze 5, then it makes sense to be put back there.

Think of it like this: Let's say Silver 4 is 1000 MMR (just a guess). So last season, someone ends Silver 4, and goes 7-3 in their promos this season. They will gain, let's say, 300 MMR and be placed in Silver 2, which is 300 MMR higher than Silver 4. Makes sense, right?

Now we look at someone who has been in Bronze 5 last season. Let's say the MMR for bronze 5 is 600 MMR. Last season you ended Bronze 5, but maybe you had a ridiculously low MMR, let's say 350. By going 7-3 in promos, you gain the same 300 MMR, BUT YOU'RE STILL IN BRONZE 5!

Does that make sense?

All numbers used here are purely for demonstration and have no correlation to actual MMR values

Ok, that makes sense - time to start climbing then.
