So, where is the line here.

Just had a game where our Renekton left because, and I quote, "i have to pick up my kids from school." This was ~35 minutes into the game.

Now, while I respect putting your kids first, I feel it was irresponsible to queue for an SR match in the first place when you know you have to pick them up in about 30 minutes. That much time is what I would use on a dominion match. Maybe even an ARAM. But SR? Games commonly go upwards of 45-50 minutes. Not every game, sure, but often enough that I would argue that budgeting your time wisely would dedicate more than 35 minutes to a game. I would understand if this was further into the game, but at that point it didn't seem that someone really had thought that through. It was a close game too, with them being just a little ahead of us. Right after he left, it was over fast.

Now when I said to him "Don't queue for a game if you don't have time for it" right after he told us that he had to go, I had a Jinx jump down my throat because "real life comes first." So I ask you guys, Where is the line on this one?

This is the problem with adults. They refuse to take video games seriously. It's almost like they have priorities or something.

Yeah, he shouldn't have queued for something which takes less time, like Dominion, 3v3, ARAM or co-op vs AI (summoner's rift co-op vs AI is also typically a lot more forgiving if you need to suddenly leave).

One day when you have a life outside of video games and popcorn, you'll understand.

You're right.

The only thing I can think of is something like, he was playing because his kids were at school and his wife was going to pick them up and something happened with her and it changed so that he had to pick them up. Or alternatively the kids got sick or something happened at school and he had to pick them up early.

To queue when you KNOW you're going to have to leave in less than 50 minutes, or even if it's only reasonably likely that you'll have to leave within 50 minutes, is irresponsible and should be punished. Which isn't to say you should get off free for leaving a 1h10min game, but at least at that point you can start understanding that the person legitimately thought they had enough time to finish.

I never queue for a game unless I'm 100% sure I'll be able to finish it (barring obvious things I can't prevent like emergencies) If that means I simply have to play less because I have other more important things to do, than so be it.

I know how it feels to have someone walk out on you though, so I wouldn't want to do that to 4 other people.

Honestly, I don't know enough about the situation. It could very well have been something like "Oh, hey Mom/dad, practice got canceled today, so we could use a ride home now." A completely unplanned for event. Which we don't know anything about.

Case in point, I had to abandon a game a few days ago. Did I plan for it? No. Was it something I felt took priority? Absolutely. Though the issue in question was helping out a friend in a HvZ situation, but still.

Shouldn't have queued for a full game. Should've queued for a Dominion or an ARAM, which typically take substantially less time.

I never queue for a game if I have to do something within the next 60 minutes. Yeah I have a life, but I'm not going to potentially ruin the game for my 4 teammates. Obviously emergencies are a different story entirely, but this wasn't one. They knew they had to leave soon.
