Why does Yi get so much hate?

I'll be the first to admit he's easy to learn and play. I once hid in a bush, answered a text and heard "You have killed an enemy" because he auto'd some poor sap that walked through it.

At low elo's, where I'm at, he's usually banned. When I go against him, I do fine. He goes negative more often than he goes positive. But any time I'm him, I get the "brain dead Yi" thing almost every time. Many time, it starts before the game even begins.

Pros dont usually play him, and when I mention that, they say because he's too easy to dominate with. But, a pro will research the most OP pick for the meta and play them. Pros also know how to easily counter Yi.

I don't get it. Is he easy to play, of course. Do you always dominate with him, most dont.

The guy I just played as jungle, a Xin, started at the beginning of the game how Yi was brain dead and how only brain dead players play him. He kept it up all game. Even after I was 8-1 and he was 1-5 and found out on op.gg that two games ago, he just went 2-4 as Yi. Ended up going something like 21-2 while he was about 10-10, and we won the game easily.

  1. He can get pentakills really easy and quick
  2. He can dodge ultis and skills thrown at him by using his skill, where he becomes unvulnerable for the time being "away". so often good skill dmg is wasted.
  3. His high attack speed and dmg means that champs who arent tanky normally die within a few seconds. this means u have only a few seconds to deal dmg to him (+ he can dodge a few seconds of the fight already and still doing dmg during that time + he is then directly in front of u). If he then has Life Leech and so on u might not be able to kill him during that time. Especially when he already dodged a stun or ulti with his Q.

I can agree with the fact that he is weak, if it doesnt go right and he falls behind too much, but that is true for almost any champ. But if he is head to head or ahead he is almost unstoppable and is punching through the enemy lines, even under towers without the fear of getting killed in response. Its probably the champ with the most pentakills i ever saw up to that point and had many games where the whole team couldnt do anything anymore against a single Yi (nevermind the 4 other enemys).

In my eyes he is too broken.

And by the way: Pro games are not compareable to "normal games". in normal games we have 5 players who dont know each other, dont speak with other and most likely only ping or write to each other. so there is no teamwork and without teamwork its pretty easy for Yi to get enough kills to be good enough. For example someone isnt looking at pings because he is focused on the minions/champs in front of him. When u can speak with each other its a lot easier to evade such situations but its not the case in normal games. So if someone says pros dont usually pick that champ .... Whatever u say.

Because playing against him removes your agency. He has an answer to anything so whether or not you beat him depends entirely on whether or not he plays his cards right. Sure you can counter him with CC, or burst him before he can shred you, but if he's good enough, he can counter anything in your kit.

People hate when they can't win an encounter unless the enemy screws it up. It's called priority, and Yi almost always has it.

The only exception to his ability to counter anything is point and click instant CC... which is itself a cancer that shouldn't exist in the game.

I think it's because losing to a champion with a simpler kit than the one you're using is frustrating to some people. Seasoned players know he's just a one-trick pony though so they can abuse his weaknesses (15 minutes of uselessness, poor base tank stats, no utility, etc).

Yi is what i call a 'noob stomper'. He is a slightly outdated champion with a basic kit that can become overwhelming to players who either don't know how to play against him (which is common in low elo) or they do not have the right champions to disable him.

People mostly in platinum and below have the opinion that Yi is a 'noobchamp' or 'braindead rightclick to win' champion, they aren't entirely correct but it's what they believe.

Yi isn't difficult to play, but he isn't easy either. He just looks easy when fed or against the right champions. He is either really good, or really bad.

I am a very seasoned Yi main (770k mastery points :D) and my current opinion of the champion is that he is at his weakest state in the past 2 years. That doesn't mean he's unplayable, he's actually pretty good right now.

Can confirm that i have recieved a lot of name calling when playing Yi, but knowing that their opinion of my champion isn't the same as mine, then it doesn't matter.

Yi is the most brain dead champ in the game, I started with him as my first and quickly found zero skill expression so I dropped him asap. Even someone like Jax who jumps on you and wins, _at least has to aim that jump. _

He's a braindead cancer champ that snowballs way too hard and requires 0 effort to play.

And btw I like playing Yi, I'm just honest.

It's because even though the right computer and right player with long range CC or a formidable melee range CC who can survive his initial Alpha strike can kill him...... so many other champions aren't like that.

Alpha strike is the game's only non Ult Unstoppable, and it's been made almost spammable with SoS. It's practically a better spell shield than Nocturne or Morgana have, if used correctly.

His R is the only pure slow immune in the game, and it resets. Furthermore, his W pauses it, making it naïve to try to do something to "wait it out" (You Zhonya, Yi W's, and waits.... Still has all the time on his ult left)

He pops when caught, but when he;s NOT caught, he's the easiest solo kill AND pentakiller in the game.

"He's cancer!"

"He's a brain dead champ!"

Both apply to the majority of the champs played by someone that does well with them.

And the champs that it doesn't apply to aren't played.

Yet, I have no issue when I go against him.

  1. Obviously does not have a good win percentage, yet a good Yi is a great split pusher.
  2. Pros dont play him often, because they can easily counter him.
  3. Has a lot of very early counters that dominate him early.
  4. Just about anyone with a decent cc can easily control him, which is half the game.

People at low elo's tend to rush over and over. The last guy I played that said he was brain dead kept trying to 1v1 me even though I was clearly at a higher level, had more kills and more cs, so therefore, was way more fed.

I'm 15-2 or something, and he's still running headlong into me to 1v1 me and calling me brain dead. Granted, he may have been a little tilted because I told him I wasn't good at math, then asked if 15-2 was better than his 2-4 at Yi. Lol

Yet, as a Vi or Warwick or Eve, I easily dominate him all the way through the game most of the time.
