VGU's vs New Champs (A Shitty Essay)
Whenever I talk to anyone in person or online about League of Legends('s?) ever so frequent reworks I hear one of two opinions. Opinion 1: Why rework champs when you could just make new ones? Opinion 2: Why keep dysfunctional champs in the game when they could be re-vamped and become more playable? I will go into depth about each and HOPEFULLY, remain unbiased about either opinion.
Opinion 1: If it ain't broke, why rework it?
If you've looked through the boards recently you would see a lot of people have this opinion about the
rework, which some would consider the worst rework in human history second only to the British Colonization of Africa (Which was reverted a few hundred years later but the damage was already done). If you were to read some of these posts the shared argument is that the Aatrox we have now is so vastly different from the one we had before that he might as well be a new champion. And with that shared argument comes another argument, why would Riot take all the hard work they had put into making Aatrox, the countless hours players spent mastering Aatrox, the lore designed for Aatrox, just to throw him away for a completely different champion. A champion whose play-style isn't even remotely the same as it was in his previous iteration. I discussed this very topic (the rework topic, not Aatrox, I can't time travel, yet) with a friend, former League player and Eve main, and what he summed up this argument pretty well. _"Think of it like this, if you take a champion, change their lore, their voice lines, their kit, and their appearance, are they really the same champion?" _
Opinion 2: Reduce, Reuse, Rework
On the equal and opposite side of the rework argument are those of who believe that reworks bring necessary updates to champions with lackluster or dysfunctional kits. One of the most well-sighted examples of the pro-rework argument is
. For some context, pre-rework Yorick was, with no other way of putting it, a mess. He was a lane bully that couldn't even bully lane who's kit was so unfun to play with, as, or against that even the most sadistic of Teemo mains would find maining him a bit to evil for their tastes. But, Riot stepped in and reworked him to a push-heavy juggernaut with a focus on summoning minions to help him on the way. The argument of opinion to is, sure, Riot could've kept old Yorick in the game and made a new champ with rework Yorick's kit, but why would you keep such a dysfunctional, nigh-unplayable champion in the game. To summarize, the primary argument of opinion 2 is; "If there are champions who struggle to be fun, interactive, or functional in any manner, and are consistently outshone by other champions, why not help them become better?"
Closing Now, I'm already aware that this post has holes in, for example you can't take 1 or 2 reworks and definitively say that all reworks are good or bad because of it, there are always outliers. I just made this post to hopefully shed some light, on what the other side thinks. But feel free to share your thoughts below.
