Community Collaboration: Evelynn Update
It's been a few days since the feedback thread was posted. Again with the disclaimer, I'm not a Riot Employee, so this will in no way be guaranteed to become a part of the game, this is just something I do for fun. Poll for the next champion to be worked on is at the bottom!
EDIT: Feel free to downvote if you don't like the idea, but let me know what led you to do so. Nothing is more frustrating than being voted down and not knowing why.
Passive - Dark Frenzy
Dealing damage with abilities grants a stack of Dark Frenzy for each unit hit. Each stack of Dark Frenzy lasts for 2.5 seconds and grants Evelynn bonus movement speed, stacking up to 6 times. Basic attacks consume a stack of Dark Frenzy to deal bonus magic damage to the target.
- Damage/stack: 10 / 18 / 25 / 33 / 40 / 48 / 55 + (15%AP) + (25%bonusAD) Magic Damage
- Bonus MS/stack: + 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7%
Q - Hate Spike
ACTIVE: Evelynn fires needle of dark energy in the direction of her cursor from her current location after a short delay, dealing magic damage to all units it pierces through.
- Cooldown: 2 Seconds
- Cost: 40 Mana
- Damage: 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 + (50%AP) Magic Damage
W - Assassin's Door
ACTIVE: Evelynn passes through the nearest wall, gaining three stacks of Dark Frenzy immediately, if she is stealthed when she casts this ability, the cooldown is halved. After passing through the wall, Evelynn’s next basic attack within 2.5 seconds deals magic damage (no physical at all) and slows the target (not consumed by E - Ravage).
- Cooldown: 20 / 19 / 18 / 17 / 16 Seconds
- Cost: 80 Mana
- Damage: 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 + (40%AP) + (100%totalAD) Magic Damage
- Slow: 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50%
** E - Ravage**
ACTIVE: Evelynn rakes the target with her claws, attacking twice in quick succession and dealing additional magic damage with each hit, applying on-hit effects twice and greatly increasing her attack speed for 4 seconds afterwards.
- Cooldown: 9 Seconds
- Cost: 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 Mana
- Damage: 100% of Total AD (Physical Damage) + 35 / 55 / 75 / 95 / 115 + 50%AP (Magic Damage) Per Hit
- Attack Speed Bonus: 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120%
R - Shadow Walk
PASSIVE: Evelynn gains Shadow Walk at level 1. Her attacks after breaking stealth consume Dark Frenzy at double the normal rate for 3 seconds.
- Rank 1 - Evelynn become stealthed after not receiving damage for 7 seconds. Enemy champions within 700 distance of Evelynn and True Sight effects reveal Evelynn, damage removes her from stealth. Dealing damage, receiving damage, or casting abilities breaks stealth. Breaking stealth for any reason grants 3 stacks of Dark Frenzy
- Rank 2 - Evelynn gains access to the active portion of this ability. While within brush, she stealths twice as quickly, and she is not revealed by nearby champions while stealthed within brush, but is still revealed by True Sight effects.
- Rank 3 - Evelynn’s first ability out of stealth has an additional effect: Q - Increases the range of the ability by 50% and grants a second cast of the ability with this effect. W - Slow amount increased to 75%. If the attack is from behind, the target is stunned instead of slowed for the same duration. E - Amplifies further damage to the target from Evelynn by 20% for the duration of the attack speed increase.
- Rank 4 - Evelynn stealths in 6 seconds instead of 7, and no longer appears on the minimap unless revealed by nearby champions or True Sight regardless of stealth status.
ACTIVE: Evelynn breaks free of all movement impairing effects and stealths herself regardless of combat status over 1 second. Damage received extends the time it takes to stealth to up to 2 additional seconds. Evelynn gains maximum stacks of Dark Frenzy upon stealthing, and each stack operates at twice the normal effectiveness. When Dark Frenzy expires, the stealth effect provided by this effect does as well. While Stealthed by this effect, the range at which Evelynn is detected by enemy champions is reduced by 25/50/75/100%, she is still revealed by true sight effects during this time.
- Kills and assists reset the cooldown of this spell.
So what's the deal with the kit? The feedback I got told me to focus on her stealth and her assassination potential. The problem that I had to tackle was that Evelynn's stealth is highly oppressive early in the game, during the lane phase, while being little more than a novelty later in the game.
My solution to this was to make her Stealth her ultimate. It's her master tool, her defining trait in the game, so let's capitalize on it. The first part of this was making a scaling passive with effects that the Evelynn player could really look forward to, but that the enemy could predict and play against. The second was the active effect, for when Evelynn _really _ needs to become hidden in a hurry, she should have that option, and successful use of that active in her primary goal - killing fools - should reward that. Because an on-demand stealth is a very powerful tool, I've gated it behind the second rank of the skill (level 6), so that you really feel that power spike, but you retain that pre-6 stealth we all know and love.
So what about her assassination potential? Historically, when Evelynn has had the tools to damage people enough to kill them outright, coupled with her stealth this has been a major issue. By tying her damage into Dark Frenzy, and granting her stacks for breaking stealth, she is motivated to attack from stealth, as that's her strongest point, however she's not completely defenseless without it by allowing her to generate stacks via spell hits, and expending them by way of basic attacks (and E, that's going to be one scary damage tool if you consume two stacks of Dark Frenzy, coupled with the attack speed boost). I've decoupled her Q from it's auto-target system and made it a short range skillshot instead. Why? It's not what you think, I'm not doing that to "raise the skill cap of the champion", it's because the skill, when auto-targeted, needs to be fast enough for reliable damage, but slow enough that you can dodge it if you're quick enough, however this offers a problem when it has the potential to generate more than one stack of Dark Frenzy depending on the number of people hit by it, but by making it a skillshot you can offer a delay to allow reaction (the animation I have in mind is not the one we currently use, mind you), while allowing Evelynn players the opportunity to aim the skill as they please.
The optimal assassination pattern I have in mind is as follows, in the early game: From stealth, use Assassin's Door to come from an unexpected direction, this gives you maximum stacks of Dark Frenzy to burst the target down with, basic attack the target while leading them a little with your Q, ensuring that it hits and refreshes your current Dark Frenzy stacks, hit them with E and continue to pour it on with your laner in an attempt to illicit a flash or kill, alternatively, you could walk up behind them and break stealth with Q to grant yourself a movement boost to reach them the rest of the way, but you lose out on the slow provided by Assassin's Door, possibly botching the gank should they escape. Similar patterns appear later in the game, but Evelynn becomes more of an assassin with the original pattern when she unlocks her third rank of her ultimate, allowing her to stun fleeing opponents with W's on-hit effect should she hit them from behind, allowing her to lock the target down briefly while she kills them herself, or her allies do.
Should the kit offer too much assassination potential, possible tuning leavers would include the movement speed boost nerfs gained from Dark Frenzy, the slow offered by Assassin's Door, the damage dealt via consuming Dark Frenzy, the delay for stealthing via the active effect of her Ultimate, and the attack speed boost provided by her Ravage.
It's difficult to stick numbers to this because there are many variables to consider (base stats, relative power level, item abuse), so some of them may be low or unrealistic, but I tried to make them more conservative to allow for more focus on the mechanics of the kit instead of dialing in on the numbers.
