If you're playing tanks, just become the best tank that you can. If the enemy draven is 15-0 and has tons of armor pen, you're going to melt regardless. You can try to use teleport, but if you are not sure that your teleport will win and significantly help another lane, don't waste it.
If you main top lane, the best thing you can do is be consistent. It becomes fun as long as you keep the goal on improving rather than winning. But AFAIK maokai isnt the strongest champion right now, and if you want to carry you might want to pick champions that YOU do the work with, rather than tanks that require teamwork to win with. Gnar is pretty good at filling the gap between tank and carry if you main top lane.
Oh but yes. In general stay top and do your job if THEIR top laner isn't teleporting/roaming. Only once you are experienced enough should you try to roam and teleport. Teleporting and roaming will reduce your advantage in your own lane, so if your goal is to become the best top laner you can be, you first want to maximize your ability to be a good laner. So if you're going to lose regardless.... just try to do YOUR best so that in games that your team doesn't feed hard, you might become the carry just by being such a good tank

In the end it's about your own skill anyway. You won't become bronze if you are good enough :)
