Personal gold advantages into team advantages?

I was reading S@20 the other day and saw this sentence, which intrigued me.

"An ahead Ahri often struggles to convert even a significant lead into a large enough advantage for her team (an issue some assassins have as well)."

I rarely play norms and never play ranked, but I was still intrigued. Why is this the case for some champions? Is this the kind of thing where the champs' kits support them winning lane, but otherwise losing the scaling game? Someone who's better at this game than me explain, I want to learn.

Yes. That is a general way of looking at it. If you dominate lane as Ahri but you are vs Galio and two other tanks, you won't have the damage to do anything in the late game. Ahri needs squishy targets to kill and her damage is still on the lower side when compared to her competition.
