Main vs diversity for a new player

As a new player not yet lvl 30, would it be better to main one champion and roll, or even 1 or 2 champions per roll so that i can focus on other aspects of the game, or would it be better to play as many different champions in as many different rolls to get more experience and knowledge with different play styles.

In the people I've been teaching, they refuse to pick a champion to main (one of them finally picked Kindred a few days ago. ????????), and thus I see them struggling with individual champion mechanics - They will spend most of a game trying to figure out Ryze's combos, before dropping him and picking up rengar, or whatever; instead of learning about warding/lethality/mr/mixed builds/whatever.

Basically, I would suggest picking someone (doesn't matter who, but generally mages are more versatile, in my experience), and maining them hard until you know the basics of the game. Then I would suggest following Stevobrine's plan, and branch out into a small pool of champions.

Also, it isn't necessary that you only play your 10 champions, but I think its better if you only play those 10ish in ranked. I have had several experiences with 1st times/new-at-Xchamp in ranked, and I won very few of those games.

In my very unprofessional opinion, I think you should play every champ in a bots game so you can know what they do and see if you like them. You should ultimately find the role that you like and choose 3 champions in that role to play. I am just a bronze 2 player so i could be telling you completely wrong info though

Play what ever the weekly rotation throws at you. ^^ Best way to to understand the game and your teammates which is key for any improovment.

Sometimes you'll get a champ you completely suck with - sometimes you'll find a champ that perfectly fits your playstyle... both is good. ^^

It's a good idea to work on mastering one champion for now, as you won't have much IP to buy more (runes are expensive AF). Try to build up to about 2 per role, 3 in your secondary role, and 4 for your main role. And once you've gotten pretty good with a champion, find other applications for that one. Like Sona? Try Sona top. Morgana main? Morg mid. Diana jg. Ahri top. Darius support. Keep trying new applications. 10 champions you have mastered, and can play in each lane, is far superior to 30+ champions that you can play somewhat well in a lane or two.

Basically, strike the balance. It's far easier to master 2-3 champions, but you also need enough diversity to play what the team needs.

diversity is a meme

pick maybe two or three champions for two roles and get good at them

Main a handful but its very helpful to have played every champ. Knowing an enemy's rotations/CDs will help you fight them and give you understanding of their range. Pick a handful of champs to main(less than 5) and you should be ok. that being said, its better to learn a role or two, not a champ or two. Learn how to support well.

Main role- 3 champs Secondary- 2 Everything else- 1

Having multi-role champs that can flex to other roles is a huge boost, as champion familiarity can pull you through a lot of lanes.

Find champions you REALLY ENJOY playing for your main roles, and become proficient with them first.

play the many as many. because you dont even know what you want to main. experience everything and enjoy your climb to 30.

I recommend trying out every champion atleast once when they become available in free week. Perhaps read a guide prior to playing as them so you have a basic understanding on where they go and what items them build. Or at the very least ask your teammates before hand "what lane does Irelia normally go in?" and they will usually respond "Top lane."

That said, don't go jungling in the early stages of your league of legends career.
