I just want his R to actually do something before being interrupted. Sometimes I cast it and I don't even get one tick before I am interrupted and the full cooldown goes into effect. Why can't it be like cait's ult at least?

it has a lot of range, you should make use of it.
That one doesn't bother me, at least they take a minimum of 1 tick. Fid's ult does. You can interrupt his channel and it nixes the entire ult. At least with other channeled ults like Vel\nunu, you take some damage.
