Trading Mastery Points for Starting Gold

I was wondering what would happen if we implemented a system for trading mastery points for starting gold. There are two main reasons this could be useful.

  1. As it is preseason, this alleviates some of the stat loss from not completing new mastery pages. People forget to make mastery pages for champions and roles that they don't normally play, and often enter games without saving their masteries.

  2. It gives another chance for meaningful choices with clear consequences.

Just for some math, there are two cases I want to consider: 10 gold per mastery point and 15 gold per mastery point.

Let's take the first case. If we do 10 gold per mastery point and someone opts to take 0 mastery points, then they start with 800 gold. This allows for starting with two starting items (2 doran's ring for mid, 2 long swords and 2 pots, long sword + doran's blade, etc. etc), equivalent to getting an early kill. This is traded in the long run for any stats you would get otherwise from the mastery tree. This is specifically apparent in the late game, where if two people are full build and one went without masteries, they are now at a disadvantage.

The second case provides more interesting choices. Imagine taking 0 masteries. Then their starting gold is now 950g. This allows for starting items of vamp scepter, pickaxe, blasting want, aether wisp, tier 2 support items, tear, codex, and so on. One might think that this would be too strong, but once again, it is a trade for the stats you would gain from the masteries. The best analogy here would be trading dragon for a turret. Different teams have different play styles and so they prioritize different objectives.

Another interesting case appears when we set 15 gold per mastery point. A lot of players might want to spend enough mastery points to reach a keystone and then convert the remaining 12 points for starting gold. This leaves someone at 680 starting gold. This means tanks or supports could start with crystalline bracer, or laners could take more pots. The interesting choices one could make are spending 13 points in order to start stacking the tear immediately, or 16 points for 2 long swords.

I know that there are a lot of people who like the new masteries, a lot of people who don't, so maybe this would help reach a compromise. More importantly, this could help newer players, especially those that want to jungle in the early levels, so that they have more starting gold and are less likely to die. Of course this is just an idea, but I was wondering what people's thoughts would be on this.
