Riot, why is position swapping in champ select a bad thing?

Edit: I miss-understood the message, I thought it meant that if I lane swapped a lot it would prevent me from picking which role I wanted to play, and would always auto-fill me. After reading some replys I see it's just going to merg my position ranks into one rank. Great, that's what I want anyway.

When I don't get my main role(mid) I frequently politely ask if I can mid, and a fair amount of the time I get it. This has never been a problem, I've been doing this for years. But now suddenly I'm getting threaten with this message:

"You played a different position than you where assigned. You earned LP for the position you played."

Ok, no problem Riot. I played mid even through I as assigned top, so I get LP for mid, as I'd expect. Except the message does not end there.

"Frequent position trading could lead to deactivation of positional matchmaking."

...WHY???????????

Why am I being threatened with a punishment for changing my role in champ select? Everyone was happy.

The best answer is because since the elo of the players in the game are based on the position rank, if you que for an off lane and then trade to your main the elo of the players is not correct. But first of all LP gains are based on the elo of the people in the game, so even if it's "easier", it's worth less LP. And second, is this my fault, or your fault. I am taking a logical, fair, and non-abusive action. I simply want to play my main role more, I'm not even abusing the system intentionally(as there are MANY ways to do).

I want to get my main more, but you threaten to punish me for it?

This is frankly just poor game design. The responsibility to create a well constructed system is the responsibility of the designers, NOT the players. You are punishing me because you have a flawed system and you created a hack job of a solution to solve the problem.

But hey, at least in the 1/100 games that I get auto-filled to jung I _might _be placed against people as terrible at jung as me. Ohh, but wait, the system does not actually know how bad I am at jungle because I don't play enough jungle games, thus don't get to train it about my jung skill, and thus I still get shitty games. Thanks Riot.

Your opponent and team were matched to you according to your top lane mmr, not your mid mmr, Im willing to bet your top mmr is lower than your mid as a result you playing mid made the game unfair for everyone.

I think you're being informed/warned rather than threatened.

Even in the event that you do get your positional MMR revoked (which, by the way, we don't know if they're removing it for you specifically or the system in general), I wouldn't be so dramatic and call it a 'punishment.'

If the system finds that you are role swapping when you get an off-role an alarming number of times, there's clearly no point in allowing you to have positional matchmaking. It's not really a punishment when something gets taken away when you never really took advantage of it (don't forget that you have to swap FREQUENTLY). This reminds me of a kid crying over a toy being tossed when he never actually played with it.

Even if you have appropriate LP/MMR adjustments for games when you swap roles, it still affects the quality of the match.

Fair games involve matches where players play against others of comparable skill level. Your typical player probably doesn't enjoy playing a game where they're the clear underdog (regardless of reduced LP loss/greater LP gain potential).

You're complaining about your positional matchmaking possibly being taken away, and yet you don't think that positional matchmaking is effective anyways. This is a great anecdote that makes it even less apparent why you care about having positional matchmaking. You'll climb to the rank you deserve if you're getting your main role 99% of the time.

Imagine a player who was ranked Challenger last year by grinding nothing but Mid lane, but they are an absolute dog-sh - ... I mean Iron ADC (Exaggerating for clarity)

Now imagine this person gets auto-filled into ADC. With the new system designed to match players by their rank for the position they are drafted, they are likely to be playing against other players with other Iron players.

So in champion select they ask for and get traded with Mid.

This match will be the easiest game of their life!

It will also completely negate any skills of anyone else in that match. Their team is all but guaranteed to win, regardless of how good or bad any of the other 9 players are.

This would not be a good experience for their opponents, nor would it be a good reflection of the skills of their allies. ... or even the Challenger player's skills themselves.

Big woop, a Challenger 1v9'd some Iron's. You want a cookie?

this is absolute DOGSHIT riot is a joke and i think after these joke patches i think im done. The system was fine before by simply matching elo a challenger mid lane is more then liekly to understand sup or jungle just as much or they wouldn't be where they are. Position swapping has been a thing since beta of this stupid game, im not doing too good can i trade with you mid lane. STRATEGY its what the game is its bad enough they removed 5 man teams now they start doing this BS ya no im done. Sure threaten me riot I just won't come back there goes my money never to be spent not so much as a fking penny! until they fix this elo crapFizz

I think the key word you're missing in that message is "Frequent" position trading. They don't want you to queue up for an off role every game to play against lower mmr players, then switch to you main role.

Yea its fair until someone steals your lane and forces you out of it. Like it happen to me. So fair that i had to be kicked out of my lane without even saying anything in champ select.

Wait what the hell? Its not your fault you got auto filled. If you don't wanna play a position, and someone is more than willing to trade you why the fk are you going to be punished for this?

Riot get your shit together.

If you guys really wanna pull this then allow people to trade but disable splash LP gains/Losses after a certain rank. So you can't reach the rewards without actually playing that role. Problem solved.
