So what is a Support? ( seriously )

cllesh·2/23/2016, 6:46:33 PM·3 votes·1,139 views

I'm a support main and I get called a troll about as often as I get told thanx for doing a great job supporting. I'm just trying to figure out what exactly is a support.... what is it we do? What can we be reported for when we don't do it. Am I playing wrong if I don't do what the "bot" tells me to do in game? Can I be reported for not doing what "bot" tells me to do?

Is there a definition.... am I suppose to be playing a certain way...... what am I doing right or wrong? I can't find 1 single answer, just a ton of opinions...

Does Riot have a definition?

Does the community have a definition?

Supports official definition = the fall guy for your teams loss, and never recognized in your team's win.

Oh the ADC went 16/4/12? Your welcome ADC...but nooooooooo.

You're level 12. You get called a troll because there's lots of trolls/smurfs under level 30 who call everyone they meet bad. Don't worry about what they say, they don't actually know better.

Support is simply a champion that lanes with the bot ADC and tries to protect them and/or get them fed.

A support champion is a bit more specific, and usually covers a utility or tank type champion able to provide CC, heals, shields, etc that empower his team.

Ward and don't intentionally take cs. Poke the enemy laners. Heal your ADC if you have that ability. Do not stand 15 ft behind the wave at all times (unless you're raka) letting your ADC get rekt and miss cs.

Pretty much that. If someone bitches at you still, they are just bad. Realize you're going to get bitched at regardless. Just learn to mute and move on.

You won't find an official definition because there isn't one. Every support plays different.

Support carries the adc That's the truth. I would rather have a great support then a great adc. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of playing with this trundle support. Now I' was gold last season and haven't finished my placements yet this one but I'm sure they'll knock me to low silver so I have to climb again, but in this game this trundle was a silver 4: He was the best freakin trundle support I ever played with. Most trundle supports in bronze/silver/gold elo are just trash. Not this guy. He carried the shit out of my team and I told him thanks for it. I've carried games on nami, Leona, thresh, brand all as support. Your not gonna get credit, your not going to get fame. But your gonna set your team up for victory. Don't forget as a good support its ok to roam mid once in a while too. Yea, I'm a shit adc, but if my support is good, then I'll go nuts and go like 15/6. If my support sucks them I'm trash.

The way I look at it, the support is supposed to do whatever he or she can do to get his team a lead. This could be assisting your ADC in getting kills (and while there nothing truly wrong with a support taking kills, the gold really is better on your ADC so supports should try to hand over kills). This could be making roams to mid and trying to gank the enemy mid laner. This could be laying down enough vision or denying enough vision to be able to safely secure objectives. All in all, the supports role is really to set up as many proactive plays as possible.

support is a thankless position. you MIGHT get some thanks, which is really cool and that's how you know those people know what you do, but you shouldn't expect them. your main objective at the start is to help your marksman/adc/whatever-you-hipster-kids-call-it-these-days get money, get exp, help them stay alive, and help them achieve kills by punishing the enemy laners for screwing up. In most situations, your lane buddy is not very sturdy, which is why they need your protection, and also because chances are enemy team will have 2 champs on that lane as well so you have to even the odds. You're the body guard, the bouncer, the enforcer, and sometimes the martyr. Allowing your lane partner to farm gold and exp will allow them to build their damage items that makes them to TONS OF DAMAGE(tm) later on in the damage with every auto attack from a range and also making them exceptionally good at destroying towers, inhibitors, and the nexus.

Later game when grouping starts, your role will usually be to annoy the enemy team by means of crowd control, debuffing the enemy team, and buffing your own team, this includes tanking as well for those who take sturdy support role champs, which are great at defending your partner and usually graet at counter-engages. They also offer great playmaking abilities due to being able to catch enemies and making picks, like thresh, nautilus, leona, etc who can even dive under towers once tanky enough to allow your team members the chance to go offensive while you distract the tower onto yourself.

They say midlaners are playmakers and shotcallers, but you as a support are the watcher, the guardian who looks to their team and tries to position themselves where the teams needs them to be to offer support in the fight against the opposition, both combat support and even morale support.

Support is more of a generalization than hardset class; it's probably one of the last positions besides jungle to have several potential picks. For example (assuming your team isn't hostile and has synergy), you could run atrox as a support by setting up kills for your team with his crowd control; however if your team wants more sustain and poke then you could run nidalee as a support.

Problem is that some champions have more tools, or more useful tools that make them better supports. Alistar for example can stop enemies in their tracks like atrox, but can also heal his teammates; janna like nidalee can poke and defend her ally, yet janna's poke is also a crowd control. Another example would be blitzcrank, originally a top lane bruiser back when he came out; but as ranged physical carries got more mobility, he ended up relegated to support, since he excelled at holding them still.

On the other hand, some supports aren't particularly good paired with some carries; such as braum & graves, sure they're both close range, but because graves has to reload, it'd be rough for them to consistently use braum's stun. Whereas lucian & braum are complimentary since lucian can get an extra auto-attack for free, making braum's stun happen more often.

Again if you have friends willing to be flexible, you'd be surprised what can work; it's not just what support is good, but also which support will empower your carry without much resources (as supports are often the most behind). The most amusing example I had seen was yasou bottom with ahri support; sure she had very little damage, but since she rarely used anything but her charm, she didn't run out of mana.

While some champions are clearly meant to be supports and nothing else, like soraka & sona, there's still plenty of room for other champions to be played. Yes most of it'll be opinions, but firsthand experience can be the best teacher for you; seeing which combinations can work together, as well as which champions are flatout ineffective in other roles.

im a support main too

theres lots of different types of supports

traditional supports have healing capabilities which work to sustain the adc such as Sona Nami Soraka

some supports are very capable for engaging and punishing for poor positioning, such as Leona Nautilus Blitzcrank

other supports excell at peeling and providing a consistent source of sustained or burst damage against the enemy laners and to ensure an easy kill for the adc such as Zyra Morgana Brand

some supports are tank supports which do their best to prevent incoming damage to the adc either with their own bodies, passives, or removing them from the fight momentarily, such as Braum TahmKench Taric

my favourite type of support is a utility support, which brings tonnes of utility to a team through crowd control buffs, and unique abilities which can benefit everyone on a team. these are supports like Lulu Bard Zilean

they can also be mix and matched as well

the only thing you really DON'T want to do is hit minions

unless you're laning with kalista, but still don't because her passive is hard to utilize

Supports are people likeBraum Strong shoulders, Strong and silent (sometimes) Be like braum my friend

In terms of champion, a support is a character who functions at a high level without significant gold income. They have large amounts of flat utility and high base values. They tend to have a good deal of crowd control, although this is far from a universal trait.
