The Bigger Picture of Eternals
So there's been a recent publishing on the Nexus regarding Events and I'm glad to hear that Riot agrees with the staleness of the last 8 months events and that I'm excited to see what may be in store for upcoming events.
Now in addition to the Nexus article and the incoming feature; Eternals, I'm speculating that future missions (including events) will be more specific and invoke more players to try more champions and play styles. I say this because of the development of Eternals being champion oriented, and what people the boards suggested it being a glorified stat tracker, I can confidently predict that the same code used for Eternals could be RE-used to describe champion-specific missions. Much like how HotS handled daily quests:
- Block 3,000 damage as Janna
- Obtain 12 kills using 'Fear Beyond Death' w/ Urgot
- Inflict 4,000 damage using 'Requiem' w/ Karthus in a single match
- Win a game with 'Guinsoo's Rageblade' on Jhin
- Play 3 games in the 'Top lane' role as Vladmir
Each granting some kind of reward for completing.
Other evidence that points to this potentially happening is how TFT handles it's own weekly events. As grindy as some of them are, they still encourage players to try out certain synergies and do better with each game.
If something like this were to happen for League, it would certainly break up the monotony of queue'ing, with or without friends, for the sake of a win. Because I believe that's what League has somewhat dialed down to outside of playing the champion that you locked in. There are only so many champions Riot can fit into a single map like SR and there isn't much incentive to play champs you just genuinely don't have interest in playing in. It also doesn't help the fact that new ranked players have such limited knowledge on how champs work if they don't experience the champ for themselves, often wondering why they lost without seeking the knowledge themselves.
I think missions like these would help out so much for both new and old players by having them become goal oriented. For a new player, it would be hard to gauge how well you're doing in your role if you're only given the stats of your performance with no goal or comparison. With small missions like 'Block 3,000 damage as Janna' a player can set a minimum goal of blocking 3K damage and subconsciously test themselves to see if they achieve it in 1 or as many games. Then come out with a feeling of, "Yeah, I was able to do it!" and have Janna as a go-to support champion when the time calls for them to be auto-filled support.
I also think these missions would be fun mixups for new and old players and invoke a feeling of goal oriented team play by optimizing the combinations of champions from their missions into challenging team compositions.
Anyways, I'm looking forward to what Riot does as a solution to events and hope the execution is well received.
What do you guys think it would take Riot to introduce daily/weekly F2P missions in LoL?
