How does normal matchmaking work?

Most games I'm against plats/diamonds in NORMALS. Normal draft pick, normal blind pick, mostly plats & diamonds. I would like to know how the matchmaking works. Is it because I've just played a lot of normals and I need to abandon this account so I can play against NOT plats and diamonds? I literally have a 48.5% winrate. What are the variables that determine matchups?

Normals have different mmrs than ranked do, i'm bronze 1 but I have around a gold mmr for normals so I usually play against golds

The game looks at two variables: your normal MMR (most important) and your total games played (less important but also used). League, division, and MMR for ranked are immaterial.

It tries to make everyone on the team have around the same MMR and games played and match the team against another team of similar MMR and games played (usually giving a slight handicap to red side)

MMR is a value for your account that represents your estimated skill level. It goes up when you win and down when you lose, adjusted for the system's perception of how hard the match should have been for you.

  1. Ranked MMR has as much bearing on Normals MMR as completing the Tutorial - aka: not a thing. Comparing who has Plats, Diamonds, etc. doesn't get factored in, for the simple fact that they might be use to playing only 1 or 2 things in Ranked and trying to learn something completely different in Normals.
  2. MMR will basically come down to how much you play and how good you are. Just like the key to keep climbing in Ranked is to keep playing, the key to getting a higher MMR is going to be to keep playing.
  3. As a side effect of 2, many people who play a lot of Ranked to get a high Rank don't play as many Normal games, thus their MMR is lower in Normals.

I need to abandon this account so I can play against NOT plats and diamonds?

No. You could simply switch over to playing Ranked instead, which should make it so you're getting a lot of Bronze and Silvers instead.

your mmr is very low to be playing with plats and diamond unless you are plat/dia urself.

its because they havent played normals since they reached lvl 30 so their mmr is still low.

From the looks of it, you are playing in a group that is like high silver/gold elo, and its putting you against other groups. The Jarven in your zed game was like in a group of 3. The D5 jax in your lee game was with ashe.

From looking at OP.GG in my matches, the making tries to balance out the overall MMR of both teams. For an example, I was in a 5 man with my friends who are all silver 1 or gold 5. I'm diamond 5. The enemy team was 1 plat, 2 high gold, 2 bronze, and over all, the MMR average was pretty even. We lost that match though rip

It really just seems like when you're in a group, you might run into that other group whos platinum along with their bronze friend. Then all hell breaks loose in the matchmaking. Thats looks like what happened to you lmao! http://imgur.com/a/WkDnJ

It makes sense on paper, but in reality it can become a coin flip from snowballing

Running into two diamonds though, that's just bad luck. They must have had lower normals MMR for whatever reason.
