How do plat/diamond players just absolutely run low Elo games

I played with a plat or diamond smurf the other evening who was a friend of a friend, and literally every game we played he ran through top lane I mean shit on whoever he was lanes against. (One game he was Darius so I don't think much of that game) but my question is how do you absolutely run through each and every game like that, are the mistakes low Elo players make glaringly obvious( if yes what the hell are they?) or do you guys understand the matchups you're up against? Any insight would be awesome

Yes, their mistakes are really that obvious. I'm not high diamond or anything (I'm d5), but playing against silver players in flex or normals they do make a lot of really obvious mistakes. Its the same way for high diamond players vs me.

Lower elo players make so many mistakes it is hard to start anywhere meaningful. Warding is usually pretty lacking, positioning is bad, csing doesn't seem to be a priority. I've actually lost a lane to a silver Riven player 0-2 and was still ahead in gold because she only got 40 cs at 10 minutes to my 95. A lot of lower elo players don't understand the concept of pressure or trading with respect to cooldowns. I had a Riven use all 3 uses of her Q to waveclear, then try to fight me when I went in because I knew I had all my cooldowns up and she did not. Then she complained about how OP my champion was.

If you want to improve to recognize these mistakes, I would recommend one tricking an easy mechanical champion (So not Ryze or Riven, something like Annie) so you don't have to focus on playing the champion as much and can focus on the game.

I'm only plat 4 but I can tell you some of the things:

  • CSing
  • Understanding the matchup. That includes knowing the champions. Their CD windows. Passives (a lot of people forget about Volibear/Olaf passives). Main damage type. Execute damage type if applicable.
  • Map awareness/warding. Turn ping volume to max. Check map when you hear a ping. Check map as you are last hitting. Check map before trading/all-in.
  • Minion wave management including pushing, freezing, bouncing, building, fighting in minion waves
  • Mechanics. That includes baiting, dodging skillshots, attack moving, animation cancel, attack reset, combo execution, using brush.
  • Not taking bad trades. Not getting greedy for CS/kills. Quick reaction.

A lot of this comes with experience but you have to actively try to improve until it becomes 2nd nature. And know that you will never be as good as Faker.

They will more often play to get the nexus, instead of chasing kills or clearing the jungle/ CSing when you have numbers advantage.

The mistakes a given player will make are not the same as the next player at the same ELO, so it's hard to answer to "what the hell are they?". But yes, almost by definition, if you are in Silver, you are making "obvious" mistakes for someone in Diamond. I mean, it's **because ** you are making more obvious mistakes that you are ranked lower. Or the other way around, it's because they are better at spotting mistakes / have a better understanding of the game that they are ranked higher. And it's not specific ti Plat+. Take a high Silver player versus a Bronze 5 and it will be the same.

Maybe theoretically it's possible to have very good lane mechanics and still be stuck in Silver due to very bad macro play and decision making, but that's still unlikely.
