As a team it may be harder until you learn to play well together.

Individually though its just all about growing as a player. I peaked at gold 2 last season and ended in gold 3 so I still have a lot to learn as well, but some things I noticed that got me from silver to gold are listed below. I also ranked 2 other accounts to gold as well so am familiar climbing through silver.

  1. Look more at the big picture of the game. I feel the average player gets caught up in paying attention to small details rather than whats important. Although get kills/gold/etc help win, the most important thing is killing turrets/inhibitors and eventually the nexus.

  2. Don't give up. Tons of games are thrown so just try and stay in the moment. You might be down early, but comebacks happen quite frequently. Mid & late game are a complete cluster fuck in silver so learn to take advantage of it.

  3. Spam same roles and 2-3 champs.

  4. Learn about rotating. A lot of players get stuck grouping mid with team when mid already covered exposing their top or mid turret when they could be defending it and getting that cs. People also get in the habit of just going to their lanes over & over even after they take tower instead of rotating mid to try and take that turret or top. So just always be looking for an opportunity to rotate somewhere for an objective.

  5. Choose fights wisely. Higher elo players may feel different about this, since in higher elo when people get kills they know wtf to do with the advantage and will push it. But a lot of times in gold/silver/bronze players will get kills, but then just go back to csing instead of punishing by taking a drag or turret. Or they may punish but not as hard as they could. There are also lots of random stupid shit fights that mean nothing. I personally started avoiding more of those fights and split pushed a lot instead when I was jungling. But it does depend on the situation your role/champion etc. I guess ultimately just stay focused and keep thinking of where you can try and push an advantage and take an objective. You don't have to be part of every worthless fight in silver.

  6. Map awareness. Start paying more attention to mini map. Watch enemy movements, try to counter gank/jungle, push turrets when enemy team rotates to a poor position. Try and predict enemy movements. Examples: You see 4 enemy members top lane pushing your turret. Your team goes top to try and defend. You see enemy mid is wide open. Push mid and ping any teammates around you to push with you. Who cares about that t1 top when you can take mid. Or say you jungling. You see enemy jungler just ganked top. You just ganked bot for your bot lane. Well... enemy bot lane had to back and enemy jungler top, this a great time to take dragon. Basically just always try and be thinking of where enemy is and how you can punish them.

  7. Try and clear waves when enemy is pushing but be careful to not get caught. Killing minions = they can't push without tanking the turret. However, don't overstay on a turret that is going to die. If your bot lane turret low and your the only one there verse 3 enemies, just back. The turret already dead and you just going to get dove if you stay. I did this last night like a fucking noob haha was super retarded and embarrassing. Actually... to be honest I did a lot of stupid shit (more than normal) last night.

  8. Have fun. Even if you playing at a gold level, doesn't mean you will win every game in silver. Ranking up is a grind, so prepare for that. Try your best to win, but if you lose try and learn from it and move on.

Good luck!

Shot calling! It's super important. Play around baron/elder dragon late game, keep them both warded, don't push onto the enemy side of the map unless your whole team is there (they don't have to be in the same lane, just don't push out while someone is in base or farming near it). If you are not in voice chat with your entire team, ping before engages, ping your overextended allies to retreat (don't spam ping them though), and spam ping baron/dragon/tower/inhib after a successful teamfight. Just use chat/pings to make sure everyone is on the same page with playing out the late game. In laning phase make sure you keep track of summoner spell cooldowns (type when an enemy burns flash/TP, have your jungler priortize ganking a lane who is flashless), and the position of the enemy jungler. You can ping out the enemy jungler whenever he steps on a ward, in case one of your allies doesn't notice him crossing it.

This advice is most important in solo queue, but if you and your friends already good at communication just make sure you include any players on your team who are not in voice chat with you.
