Why do people end up fed?

So recently, I was playing a game against a fizz. This fizz went ham early on, and got like 5 kills against our poor Syndra. This game ended up taking quite long, 50 minutes. Everyone was full build and level 18. Yet this fizz absolutely out damaged everyone else. I have also seen something similar with a Caitlyn, a champion who doesn't scale that well into late game. Why does this happen?

he gets a lot of gold for those kills, and while his laning partner is dead he can farm it up for free, and can then buy more items more quickly. with 5 kills that grants ~1200 gold + say 400 extra gold in farm over your mid laner which is ~enough to get a needlessly large rod above and beyond what your mid laner has. before it got to everyone having full 6 item builds he probably used his advantage to apply map pressure and allow his team to secure more dragons/barons/red/blue buffs which means he is out-damaging probably everyone on your team and maybe his.

There's two ways I commonly see people get fed

  1. The most common, is the when person feeding doesn't understand the power of the opposing champions kit. Champs that can abuse this easily are people like fizz as you mentioned and even akali who have absurd power spikes that can easily catch someone off guard and once that first kill is given up it actually takes a lot of skill or knowledge to not continue feeding.

  2. Is when one person just completely plays better than the opposing person (This doesn't happen as often once you start playing better people) But it can also explain why usually a bot lane tends to get fed more on one side than other lanes. (There's potential for two bad players on each side versus one, and all it takes is one bad person on one side to turn it into a farm fest)

Also Caitlyn isn't the best scaling ADC but she still is an ADC meaning she scales EXTREMELY well into late game.

Sometimes it's because people do not counter correctly with items or picks, and sometimes it's simply because of a players situational awareness. If you know exactly where to be and when to be there you'll do far better than a similarly fed person who doesn't.

Sometimes people have bad games...it happens...

Edit: Fizz is an assassin...he is supposed to burst people in a matter of seconds...especially full build...

All you need is one Magic Resist Item, and suddenly Fizz isn't so dangerous anymore. Even if you are a carry, its ok to build that one defensive item. For example, lets say I'm a Marksman (ADC) in bot lane and other team brings a mage support like Annie or Brand. There is nothing wrong with pushing for an early Guardian Angel.

If I'm being zoned hard, and don't have a lot gold, I might pick up a long sword, bots, a ward, and some pots on my first back and then grab a null-magic mantle and another AD item (probably a bilge water or pickaxe) on my 2nd back. Work on finishing the first AD item, and then turn that null-magic mantle into a Guardian Angle for my second complete item. Works well Bot if you facing an AD champ and an AP mage combo.

Same Idea can be applied to mid. If I was facing a Fizz mid and he was playing really aggressive, I would consider rushing a Banshee's Veil.

A little Magic Resist can go a long way. Using Banshee's Veil as an example: 55 MR is ~35% Reduction in magic damage. At some point in the Game Fizz hits you for 500 damage. With just 55 MR that 500 Damage is now 325.

Lets say you have 1000 Hp. With out any MR, This Fizz hits you with 2x500 damage. You might hit heal or flash quick enough to get away and live, probably not though. With that 55 MR, you'll have some HP left, and he has already used his combo, you now have a better chance of hitting that flash, stunning fizz, and taking him out with your own combo because he is squishy too. Banshee's Veil also gives you a shield that completely negates his first attack making it very easy for you to survive. Giving you that chance to dominate Fizz.

tldr: As a carry getting that 1 defensive item can be the smart choice, and can save you from feeding. You might get that "lol wtf buid is that" crap from your fellow players. Ignore those guys.

They end up fed because they eat.

But for realz, they end up "fed" because people only fill out their builds to their specifications, not necessarily to counter the opponent.
