Runes Reforged: Are minor rune 'families' necessary?
TL;DR let us pick neighboring runes for more options
To preface this, I do think the rework overall is a good idea. As League has grown the learning burden for new players has as well, and having to choose between experimentation with your favorite champions and trying new champions wasn't fun, so I'm glad that's going to the wayside. That being said, my biggest hypothetical gripe is it doesn't look like runes and masteries got merged, it looks like runes got thrown out. Right now, masteries don't tend to change much game to game, you choose the keystone that synergizes with your champion's kit, with some personal preference choices. For the most part, the only changes I make game to game is HP regen in or out if I see poke coming in the match up. Runes however function as a direct slider of how greedy you want to be. How many of those armor seals do you want replace with Gp10 Lulu? Think you can dodge enough mage skill shots to replace some MR with mana regen?
Runes Reforged definitely fulfills the mastery side; there are plenty of personal preference choices that will be even more impactful now, so the 'I want find my favorites then stick with them' crowd will be happy. After playing with the calculator though, I want more fiddling. why can't I take both Cosmic Insight and Celestial Body if I feel my support tank will need the hp more than I'll need to go into debt? Being able to choose neighboring runes would give us fiddlers some nice options based on the match ups we see. From my once over in the rune calculator, there didn't seem to be any glaringly OP combos of minors that were purposely sealed away. The only potential was the precision damage percentage increases, but all of precision does that to some degree anyway. If necessary Riot could always bring back the Major Rune classification, or have a Unique limiting title, for exaple "Legend:"
Also are the Major + Minor combo bonuses placeholders right now? If not, why is inspiration the only one with unique combos? That seems like a huge waste of potential design space that would allow for the 'feel' of current runes to come back in.
