Champions That Aren't Supports Played As Supports?

Hey all. So I have a question - I imagine it sounds silly to most experienced players, but this is something that really confuses me. Why do people play champions that aren't supports as supports? It doesn't really make sense to me. I kind of sort of understand Brand and Annie, as they both have a stun...But why in the world would you play an AP-based champion as a support? Pretty much all you've got is a stun. I haven't experienced this before but I have heard that Velkoz is played as a support more often than mid, his intended role. ...What? Why?

I know I sound quite ignorant here to people with experience but this really baffles me. I initially thought it was something only skilled players use, but then I get what happened to me last week where tons of people were playing Brand (who was free at the time) support. I really don't understand this at all; can someone fill a confused new(ish) summoner in on why playing champions that aren't supports as supports is a thing?

Vel'koz support comes from having a slow, a knock up, and true damage. He can be effective even without damage items.

Honestly, the support role always gets filled by champions who weren't intended for it. Blitzcrank was intended as a top lander, Morgana, Zyra, and Veigar mid, Nautilus was top/jungle, etc.

Because most of the real supports are over-nerfed or very boring, tbh.

Brand and Annie are actually legit support picks now.

I think Gangplank is still classified as a support secondary after his old kit gave buffs to allies

Because oddly, most traditional supports are too limited. Damage wins fights and games, so supports that can do damage can do more for their team than ones who ONLY provide utility via CC and the like.

A janna who is ahead is a CC peel bot. An ANNIE who is ahead is a threat by herself... and ALSO still a CC bot.
