why are mage supports a thing?

so after played somewhere around 400 matches as support as a support main i feel like i can sit down and say with a solid modem of experience that as a whole a mage support is not really at all a healthy part of the bottom lane dynamic. i can honestly say i haven't one time lost to a Veigar Ahri Velkoz Syndra Lux Fizz mage "support" and said 'well they traded quite well and beat me fairly' or 'well i got out traded' because that not what happenes. what did happen was they decided to deny their team utility that the support role should have and instead add raw kill potential(just like a certainSinged individual that got banned), and to the teams facing them there is not "out-trading" or "playing safe" that can stop a competent mage besides another mage or a gank. it causes lanes that are unwinnable and your toxic to have to deal with. furthermore maybe half of them will actually even get ss. on things like zyra support straight damage is not just a regular build but the build with the highest win rate

In my personal opinion they stand as a very toxic evidence that so long as you win it doesn't matter and think that this being allowed to stands has made a very bad president on the game as a whole and need to be dealt with. all of that being said i think nerfing them in some manner is one of the few real recourse's that can work. TLDR: nerf mage "support"

and before you ask it was a veigar that just ruined a ranked match for me. still doesnt change anything.

The only way to nerf mage supports would be to make AP items stronger, and mages more item-dependant.

And, for some reason, Riot is doing the exact opposite for a few years now.

Because these mages have utility and don't need gold to function well. They function pretty well. I have no idea why you're listing Ahri and Fizz.

There's nothing wrong with mage supports. This kind of variety makes the support role a little less awful.

Bot lane can basically be broken up into kill, poke, and sustain lanes. Kill > sustain > poke > kill. Kill lanes have all in champions like leona and come at you with everything but the kitchen sink. This beats sustain because you don't have a chance to heal up. Poke lanes whittle you down until they can kill you or force a back. This beats kill lanes because they can keep their distance from the all in. Sustain lanes have weaker poke, but can heal damage from trades out come out ahead. This beats poke because You come out on top of trades.

So basically pick soraka, sona, nami, etc into mage supports.

also that's not at all what "support" singed got banned for.

Because trying to carry the game from the support position as a traditional support is pretty much impossible. So people would rather have a scoreboard impact in a game.

Many of the older supports were just tanks or mages. There aren't that many pure supports - Alistar had to be nerfed and reworked for years and now he is just a troll pick in the jungle and top. He has nowhere to go.
