A Proposed Summoner Spell Revamp
To Preserve and Further Maximize Aggression in the Meta While Allowing for Greater Variability; A Proposed Summoner Spell Revamp
There are two major flaws with the summoner spell system in League of Legends, both of which boil down to the same general idea. The first problem exists in the fact that some summoner spells can be, by design, more useful than all other summoner spells (I'm looking at you, flash). The second problem exists in the idea that the meta has a heavy influence on what summoner spells are most efficient at any given time. These two flaws in the summoner spell system, when allowed to coincide, greatly decrease the variability in summoner spell usage by forcing players to take certain summoner spells even when others may be more desirable.
Before getting into my proposed solution for the aforementioned problems, I feel like I should first relate them to the current state of League in order to prove that the problems do, in fact, exist. If you feel this is not necessary, feel free to skip this paragraph, as that is all I will say here. The first problem, the problem of efficiency by design, has always exists and will always exist in the form of a single summoner spell; flash. Flash allows champions to move around the map during combat in a way that would be outright impossible if they didn't have flash. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary for a player to bring flash, because if they don't, their enemy will be able to do something that they won't be able to no matter how they play or what items they build (ignoring champions that have a flash built into their kit, which is irrelevant since it's innate in a champion's skill set rather than selected by a player). The second problem, the problem of meta-defined efficiency, can be seen clearly by the current double tp meta. Because the meta is so aggressive right now, if either team is lacking a teleport mid or top lane, that immediately puts them behind the other team from the get-go. From the moment the first fight breaks out, the team with two tps will win the fight regardless of how the other team plays due to strength in numbers, which puts the other team behind merely because they lack an extra teleport summoner spell.
My proposition, in its most direct form, is this;
- Clairvoyance is deleted from the game.
- Flash and Teleport are no longer summoner spells 2.1) The cooldowns of Flash and Teleport are now ~10 minutes. 2.2) Flash and Teleport are now innate spells that all players have access to in game, regardless of what summoner spells they choose.
- A new movement buff summoner spell is introduced.
Before raging about how drastic of a change this would be, please listen to my reasoning for each element of my proposition.
Clairvoyance is no longer viable with how easy it is to manipulate vision in League (ex: trinkets, sightstone, wards). Therefore, it should be deleted. There was a time when it was useful, but that time is long gone and will never return as long as Riot stays on the path they're currently on.
Flash and Teleport both have unique and powerful mechanics that can't be emulated by anything in the game other than a few champion skills. Therefore, leaving them alone among summoner spells that they heavily outshine seems unreasonable. To solve this, there are only two options. The first is to delete both of them from the game. I believe this would have a negative impact on the game since the utility from flash and teleport both allow for aggressive and rewarding gameplay. This means that the second option, treating them as innate spells that all players have access to, would be a better idea. However, this brings about another problem; if every champion in the game had flash and teleport, things would be way too chaotic. No one would know what's going on, and people would be teleporting and flashing all over the place. This is why I propose a drastic nerf to both of them.
The reason a new movement buff summoner spell must be introduced is because otherwise ghost would be the only movement summoner spell left after flash is removed. This would result in ghost being valuable over all the other summoner spells due to uniqueness. I don't care what the new summoner spell would be, and frankly it doesn't matter. It would just need to have something to do with buffing movement without introducing an uncounterable game mechanic like with flash.
Please go easy on me, my fellow summoners from G & B. I'm just a humble GDer who felt like having some fun by theorycrafting some summoner spell changes :D
