Request for Extended and Compressed Ability Tooltips

Ability tooltips are essential in providing crucial information as to how abilities work, and it's critical to understand exactly what's behind the numbers listed to know how a champion's power develops and how item builds affect them. In spite of this, there's often a lack of clarity to these numbers: new players, who may not be familiar with the color-coding of AP, AD and other stats, may not know how to build on their champion at all, and experienced players, who want to know exactly how much their abilities scale with each stat, also run into difficulties (e.g. does this ability scale with total AD or bonus AD? Does this ability's ratio improve over time?). Testers and theorycrafters also run into similar tedium when trying to document the exact numbers behind each ability, but on the flipside there's also the issue of always having to add numbers together (i.e. the base and scaling) when trying to figure out the total damage one's ability might deal, which isn't easily achievable in the middle of combat.

So far, Riot's made steps to add clarity to ability tooltips, namely by listing health scalings whenever possible, and that's fantastic, but there's still a long way to go, and while those listings add information, they also have the side-effect of bloating ability tooltips for those who just want to skim through the essentials as fast as possible. Here's what I propose:

The Changes:

  • Add a slider in the options that allows players to switch between Extended, Standard and Compressed tooltips. Perhaps there should be a hotkey to toggle between these modes.
  • Standard tooltip is the current setup, listing an ability's base damage and numbers from stat scalings. This should the default setting for all summoners at level 30.
  • Extended tooltip lists the exact ability ratios alongside their numbers as well as the stat they scale from, similar to current health scalings (e.g. "100% of total attack damage" or "50% of ability power"). This should be the default setting for all summoners below level 30.
  • Compressed tooltip merges the base damage and scaling into just one number.

The advantage to this is that it would offer all of the advantages of each mode of delivery, while also allowing players to switch out of the potential negative side-effects associated with each format. People looking for detailed information would have full access to it, which would add a lot of documentative clarity, and people simply interested in the bottom line could gain a lot of numerical clarity by switching to a more compressed format.

What do you think?
