@Riot Meddler ADDRESSING STATE OF THE GAME JAN POST (SUPPORTS)
I just got done reading this blog post about the state of the game right now. Initially, I was excited to hear that you are actually interested in improving the role. The problem is you don't think the champions are a contributing factor into the role itself. That is half the truth. Variance between the different supports in each class is a major problem. I know the difference between a Vanguard and Warden support. I know what Leona can do as a support and I know what Braum can do as a support. They both have distinct playstyles that fit the champion and also the support role. Leona is good at engaging and ccing enemies so they don't go anywhere. Braum is good at protecting enemies with his shield and making sure they get out alright, while still having some options to be an aggressive support. I know what both of them bring to the table and it is highlighted very well in their kits and gameplay.
Can we say the same thing about Enchanters? This class is not interesting, providing stimulating gameplay, and they all in a sense have the same type of abilities and build the same way. A typical Enchanter will have one damage ability, one heal/shield ability, one cc ability, and one ULT that does something else that is already in their kit. They all build the same shield/heal enhancing items to increase the amounts of their shields/heal they spam all game. You have made this group of champions so generic and uninteresting, that it is a big problem. You do not feel like it is a problem, Riot. Let me explain this to you and break it down.
What is the exact difference between Lulu, Sona, Karma, and Janna? They all have one damage ability, one heal/shield ability, one cc ability, and one ULT that does something else that is already in their kit. They all shield and heal in the back and build items to increase the effectiveness of that one ability that is spammed in the game. This type of stimulating and fun gameplay is what you made the Enchanter class. We have mid laners like Malz, Brand, Vel and even Lablanc coming into the bot lane and offering something more than the boring Enchanters are. What all of these mid landers are giving bot lane is variety and difference in playstyles. I cannot say that when I play Karma support and sit in the back and press one button the entire game.
I want to play as Karma and really feel that battlemage/enchanter hybrid she is supposed to be played as. I want to feel like Janna is supposed to be a champion that has abilities to get me in and out of battle with her winds . . . and that she is really living up to the fantasy and gameplay Janna is supposed to. Am I doing that with Karma, Janna, Lulu, or Sona? No. I am building shield/heal enhancing items and sitting in the back and pressing one button. You have allowed the Enchanter role itself to overshadow what some of these champions are actually supposed to be doing in regards to their main role, lore, or theme. You have single handily taken a group of champions that are supposed to be offering more to the game and turned them into this generic champion that is supposed to be doing one thing . . . . and that is pressing that shield/heal button in the back the entire game and building items to increase the effectiveness of that one button being pressed.
Karma, Janna, Lulu and Sona are supposed to be so much more than what they are now. They have champion identities and roles not being fully conceptualized by your team, Meddler . . . . . . and you guys seem to think they are providing it. They are not. I am pressing one button the entire game and building items to increase the effectiveness of that one button I am pressing. The changes you made to Leona are very fun and live up to the type of gameplay she is supposed to have. You have not done that once for Karma, Janna, Lulu, or Sona. They all feel and play the same. You need to balance them around their main role or one thing and then as an enchanter. They all feel and play the same.
As always, stay frosty.
