After playing a ton of J4 Support I've come to learn a few things.

  1. Despite what the youtubers build in a lot of their clickbait videos, you don't go full AP. The AP you get from your support item and zhonyas is more than enough to give you all the harass, poke and even aeri shields that you need. You don't grab liandries torment and ludens and rabadons all that other stuff because the damage of your E will eventually fall off and you'll be far too squishy to actually use your godlike engage tools.

  2. As long as you land your E during the laning phase, your damage will be obnoxiously strong. With scorch, aeri and even the extra damage from your passive and the armor shred of the Q, you can easily harass a lot of squishy targets out of lane in about 5-7 spear throws.

  3. Perma ban anyone who can out harass you, and/or out sustain/shield your harass. Sona I have found to be the utmost hardest counter to this, because of her shield and healing and her Q allowing her to harass you back for even more damage. If you're gonna play this, I definitely suggest banning Sona. As even with Soraka, you just have to dodge her Q and punish her super hard.

  4. Building tank after Zhonyas is pretty dang key to making sure you stay as a hard wall target. Combining tank items with Zhonyas will mean that you stay alive much longer in fights, especially when you're focused after dropping your R.

  5. Focus less on engaging too much and using your strong knock up and slow as a way to peel for your carry. I've found out on several times that when I play like regular jarvan, there's no one to protect the carries. Think of yourself as more like an Alistar. You engage when your team is safe, but for the most part you're using your knockup, your slow and even your ult as a peeling tool. Just make sure that when you ult, you do it after your ADC has gained some distance from the target, to insure that you don't accidentally trap them. (Which I've done a lot...)

  6. Expect a lot of WTFs and potential flames if you pick this. Since apparently a lot of people don't read a lot of stuff, they immediately think you're about to troll when you play this. Be genuine with them. Make sure you have about a good 57 -60% winrate with it in normal practice games, so when people try to call you out, you just tell them to look at your record. Pick this with confidence and if they still try to flame you, shut them up with your actions.

  7. If you pick Jarvan support, the jungler will freaking LOVE you because of how Aeri works. Every single time I've played it, the jungler is almost always at about 98 - 100% of his health on that leash. As long as you drop the spear and stay right on top of them so that the aeri can proc way faster.

  8. Your roams are borderline broken. Do not be afraid to leave your lane if you're pushed under tower and look for a roam on mid lane or even to help your jungler. Once you get your Mobi boots, make yourself known on the map. Your jungler and your mid laner will adore you for it. (Though your ADC may not). If you're pushed under tower and you're both at 80 - 90% health, tell your ADC not to push the lane and go roam. Place a deep ward in the enemy jungle, look for a gank on mid, make yourself productive. Don't just stand pointlessly under your tower. They're not gonna dive you. So any time you feel like you just have down time, roam. Roam a lot. Your jungler will love you because of your deep wards and your ganking mid lane so that they don't have to constantly do it, and your mid laner will love you simply because he has two people ganking for them.

Try it out for yourself. The build I find that always works so far is:

item 3098 > item 3671 > item 3157

Once you get Zhonyas, I normally prefer to build mobi boots then Dead Man's plate next. But you can choose to upgrade your support item next if you want.

Good luck fellas.
