Familiar with basics, how to get better?

So I'm very familiar with LoL/Dota type games and understand the fundamentals and mechanics at a basic level (movement, last hitting, phases). I played dota 2 off an on, but like LoL a little better so I'm playing this now! I'm level 9 so still pretty new! What's a method to getting better? Obviously playing games - but what I've been doing is randoming a hero and pulling up their guide online to follow the ability leveling sequence so I get it right. One thing I do need to know is which lane to go to for each hero? And is there a comprehensive chart/guide on what type of champion each one is? For example like AD carry, AP carry, support, fighter, etc? Any other tips will help!

Depends on how serious you are. I've taken paid private lessons, and it really paid off.

Find 6 champions, or 2 per role, that really speak to you via bot matches and learn the ins and outs of the mechanics/builds. I remember my first matches in league where I took Fiddlesticks mid and top, and quickly figured out that mages are the sht.

Welcome to LoL! This game is very deep and there is a lot to learn, but it seems like you've got the right attitude already.

I would highly recommend watching the new viewer streams from the world championship that happened a few weeks ago. Unfortunately there's no official Riot links, but this Youtube channel recorded them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqmM6ZEOlo0

This site will allow you to click on any champion and get information (winrate and playrate) for:

  • 1st and 2nd most popular lanes (there is a tab for each)
  • Skill upgrade order
  • Summoner Spell
  • Starter items
  • Core Builds
  • Boots
  • Keystones
  • Masteries
  • Runes

Either push yourself mechanically(look for 2v1s and things like that) spamming high skillcap champions or focus more on the strategic side of the game(ganking when waves come up, objective control through warding, knowing when people back or go to side lanes or areas of the map making it difficult to contest things) Blah blah you get it. You can also look up videos on how to freeze minion waves so you can get an advantage without really having to fight the enemy laner.
