Question about Zhonyas

I was just in a game where our Yasuo knocked an enemy champ up and ulted him.While in the air the enemy champ popped Zhonyas and cancelled Yas' ult after the ult animation had already started. So I have to ask if it is supposed to work like this? I know it can cancel Zed's death mark and stop[ Naut's ult but they take time to hit you but in this case Yas and the enemy champ were both mid air when he popped it.
