Volibear - minor changes I think would make him better

Whenever you look at op.gg you see "RIP" over Volibear. Which sucks, because I think the Ursine are cool and would love to play as him without feeling like I am trolling.

I imagine he may get reworked at some point, but honestly - a mini rework is all he needs to be a viable top lane pick akin to Trundle. (am not suggesting to do all these changes, but even a couple would make him better. Especially the change to his W)

Change 1) Add an effect to his Q, making it almost like Ghost. Only, instead of passing through minions, have it where he knocks them aside. It would make his engage a bit easier, make sense since he is a bear charging on all fours.

Change 2) Make it so the "bite" part of his W can effect towers. You did this recently on a champ, I forget which one. Maybe Illaoi? Don't remember. Point is, other champs like Yoric and Darius, etc etc can use their similar abilities to do extra dmg on towers.

Change 3) Add a .75 to 1s root on his E. The roar fears minions, great. Remove the slow and add a root. Is better for teamfights, and makes sense. Roar would scare a champ briefly.

  1. His ult seems...lack luster. Instead of having it bounce, have it where the animation is that of lightning channeling into the enemy with every auto-attack. Doing continuous dmg and "shocking" them every 3rd auto, stunning them for .5s Would look cooler, feel better, and let him lock down champs if built correctly.

Lastly, his passive. I like it kind of. Just wish it was a bit more interactive and fun. Feels like a garen passive only on a 2min cd. Personally, I'd like it if instead of a heal - have it to where he either takes less damage. A passive akin to doran's shield, minus the heal. Or where he becomes immune to slow once under 40% health. First would make his early game really good. The second idea (again, I don't want both. Would be one or the other) would make him a better duelist.

All changes making him a better top laner.

Just giving ideas. Would love to see him pickable, if not meta.

Went to the site to see the "RIP" over Voli, was not disappointed! LOL XD

Illaoi doesn't bite.... Trundle can use Chomp, his Q. Voli is a decent early to mid champ (only if he ganks and only if those ganks are successful) but isn't great at anything specific and scales horribly. His R is awful, lackluster was putting it nicely. His primary kit is just a Q to flip and he doesn't have the speed to catch up to someone if they flash away (after his flip). Essentially you have to Q and hope your teammates can kill the person flipped.

Issues: -Q while you can run super fast with ghost/deadman's/glory, typically your team is not fast enough to reach up to you or the flipped the target. If you get CC'd right at the enemy, which there is a high probability you will, you'll lose a ton of hp, if not die and have to wait a long time to engage another fight. It is very hard to make something happen after your Q has been stopped by the enemy, if you do not reach your target. -His fear (E) isn't that great and the damage from it is very low, is it even necessary? -His W does good damage but they have to be low hp and je has to hit them 3 times. -His R is only good for splitting (hydra would be efficient) and it takes a moment to actually trigger, pausing him. It lasts 12 seconds, 12! How many fights in LoL or waves need 12 seconds to complete? How many champions have any abilities that last 12 seconds?

He could use some help, possible changes: -I'd like to see his chomp do a slow and do break armor/mr or give him lethality for 3 seconds.

-His E could could do an damage aoe lightning shock, where enemies who are hit by him for a certain period get debuffed in some fashion. (for 4 seconds anyone Voli AA's for the first time, while they are marked by his E, gets their DPS reduced a % for 2 seconds) I think this is balanced because it gives the player options and the player would have to choose whether to stay on the target he flipped or try to engage other enemies. They could leave in that it fears monsters/minions or does extra damage vs them, his clear time is pretty slow. *This could work with the suggested W. (example: If Voli chomps an enemy that is marked by his E, Voli's W cd is reset, but still requires 3 aa's to activate)

-His R could a go a number of ways, but what he really lacks is anything to keep him in a fight vs almost every bruiser and fighter. They would probably want to keep the "lightning" and give him his big WOW moment that they try to do with every champ.

Some R ideas: -He could call down a big lightning bolt onto himself that gives him an OP thornmail coat of fur/armor for a few seconds.

-It could create a dome of electricity giving buffs or debuffs. (similar look/range of Trundle's W, Cam's R, Thresh's R)

-It could create an Illaoi type effect, but instead of slamming the ground at the center, it creates thin 3/4 lightning cylinders that circle around him quickly for about 1.5-2 seconds (scalable), kind of like Sol's W. (to scale it, it can be Voli's HP - example: anyone who is hit by one takes a 1 time true damage hit of 10% of Voli's max HP) This is pretty cool because the lightning could be dodged. Too OP? You could say that the lightning spell ends when 1 or 2 strikes an enemy.

-Lightning claws could actually allow him to maul someone, like an actual bear would and grant him a huge spike in attack speed and damage. (example: for 5 seconds Voli gains 60% attack speed and 100% critical damage or 100 ad.) It should have a long CD too. I think this is interesting because it opens up different builds for Voli, who is known as a tank champ who only scales off hp. It helps his 1v1 fighting ability, which currently is pretty poor. It allows players more choices, do you build big HP to tank for your team or do you build for more 1v1 fights? Do you use the new E and then try to debuff everyone? Too op? The spell could say, have a trade-off and read: Volibear equpts in lightning debuffing his own armor and magic resistance to dramatically increase his damage ability from auto attacks.

Anyway, none of this will probably happen, but I appreciate you opening the conversation for Volibear. I rarely post on this forum, especially with more than a sentence or two, but I definitely agree that Volibear needs a rework/update. I used to play Voli a lot, but if the team got behind then it made extremely difficult to do anything catch up. Hopefully, someone reads this and enjoysthe mental visual of an improved Volibear. It is definitely a fun topic and something that Riot hopefully works toward in the near future.

He needs a base attack speed increase also.
