Riot, why not throw newcomers more freebies?
I got the Ask Riot where you guys say you don't want to dumb League down to make it easier to get into. 'K. I am fine with that. But newcomers have an immense amount of IP to grind to get a runepage sorted, as well as champions picked.
I understand wanting to keep the current IP grind alive for current players. That's also cool.
But a newcomer should have an easier time getting worked up to 30 and ready to go. I think the pain of purchasing rune(page)s should be reduced for low-level accounts. I have an idea how that could work:
At every level that you unlock a new runeslot, you give them three rune shards that fit into that slot. For example, for a Mark you could have Damage, Lethality and Magic Pen. To create a rune from these shards, you need to use two rune shards to turn one into a full rune.
So you have an Attack Damage Rune Shard, Lethality Rune Shard and Magic Penetration Rune Shard. You want Attack Damage, so you click "Craft Rune" on it, use Lethality Rune Shard and Magic Penetration Rune Shard as materials and presto. You got a free Tier 3 Attack Damage Rune to slot into that slot you just unlocked.
This achieves the goal: Allow new players to grind less before being able to play on a level playing field and let them spend their IP on (further) customisation and champions
Moreover, it also:
- maintains an IP economy where you need to grind to fill out a rune page or champion.
- encourage players towards a specific role/champion to get their first page for.
Once they reach level 30, you can give them a full rune page for free (2 is seriously too little) as well as a 6300 IP or less champion, and new players should have an easier time getting into League of Legends without dumbing the game down.
Lower the barrier of entry on the setup side rather than the gameplay side.
