Why is ryze in the new player tutorial thing?

When I first started playing, I randomly picked ryze in the tutorial thing (choice of Ashe, Ryze, or Garen), and I almost gave up on league because I had no idea how his kit worked. Why not switch it out for something like annie? I assume that at some point ryze was easy, but 78 reworks later his kit is definitely not the best for someone's first or second tutorial in the game

EDIT: Just checked myself, Ryze is no longer an option in battle training (and the basic tutorial forces Ashe).

Upvoted because your right. Ryze is commonly seen as one of the most skill-intensive champions in the game (he balanced with absurdly low win rates in solo play because pros still make excellent use of him).

Ryze used to be very easy to play. Realistically, what made him easy to play still exists (point and click snare, then follow up with other spells), however one of his other point and click spells became a skillshot, and his ultimate has been changed from a damage-increasing spell (which is basic to use) to a pure-utility spell that requires team coordination. Pretty silly for a 1v1 tutorial. Also very silly that I remember playing Ashe for that tutorial and being told to build a thornmail.

Annie would be perfect. All her abilities are simple and easy to understand and her Q encourages conscious last-hitting. Along with this, there's still aspects to her kit that a player can expand on after tutorial.

The most difficult parts of her kit for a new player to understand would be: a) How her E works (relatively simple to read and understand) b) How to control Tibbers (pretty easy once you realize it) c) How stunning makes Tibbers go into rage-mode (again, easy once you see it/do it)

None of these are essential parts of her kit and a new player can get away without knowing these things initially.

Nah man, the three tutorial champions should Yasuo, Ryze, and Draven, the simplest and least complicated champions for their respective roles. Just think, by the time new players hit level thirty, they are gonna be crazy good, or not be playing any more.

Given how the new level 1-30 rewards include ashe, garen, and brand. I think brand would make a better replacement that or change brand for annie in level rewards

The original Ryze's kit was very straightforward; all of which besides the ulti were all single-target lock-on spells (E to debuff target, W to lock down just like today, Q to nuke them from orbit), and the ulti was a self-buff that makes his spells AoE for a short period (Ryze was somewhat balanced because he sucked at teamfights and clearing due to his normal kit being very single target intensive, and frequently need to blow his ulti just to clear a large wave). There were also no other special interactions in his kit besides him also scaling on mana instead of just AP, no combo mechanics or anything or at least not as big as today (I think certain actions trigger the Q CD reduction or something? But it wasn't that big of a factor outside of sustained fights); things were simpler back then, those were the days, I do miss my "this spell just does damage for X amount" design.

Ryze was only not balanced because of his W being a arguably too strong of a lockdown (I have no issues with games having guarantees like lock-ons, but still, an instant root across a distance that is also a lock-on seems much, one of those probably needs to go), which after 100 reworks Riot hasn't got around it and he continues to be a trouble pick no matter how convoluted Riot is trying to make the rest of his kit be to try and counter-weight that single W.

As such old Ryze was put in the tutorial because he's one of the easiest to pick up, and should be taken down now.

Update the Ryze bot as well, he still acts like he has his old ult but instead he's just ulting into the middle of minon waves when he's like 2 feet away from me or running at me, walking out of it.

One of the reds made a statement regarding this. I think they wanted to change it at some point. (And it completely fell on the back burner.)

Last time i checked Ryze was not a tutorial option.

In this post i discuss why Lux should be the new tutorial mage, and why Annie SHOULD NOT be in the tutorial.

why would riot even try to get new players to play ryze? this champion keeps getting nerfed for the LCS.

Potchikir11/11/2017, 10:21:53 PM2 votes

replace him with annie

Ryze was originally very straightforward to play without a bunch of convoluted extra effects you had to micromanage. The first few reworks kept him that way, until a couple years ago when riot thought minigames would make him more interesting to play.
