Unpopular Champions

What makes a champion unpopular or underused. Is it because they don't fit most team comps or are they just lacking some Pizazz?Galio Galio is the most underused champion in all of League and I don't know why? He has a GIANT aoe corruption spell that can turn the tides of a fight. Like??? I wanna hear your opinions!

Many champions are poorly designed, one reason or another. For example, Poppy is so ridiculously gated by her mana because if allowed to run remotely free, she will hyper carry the sh-t out of a game. Another example includes Gangplank, who if he actually had well rounded numbers, would come close to an unstoppable melee carry (yes, even worse than a fed Yasuo. That's food for thought). These champions are recognized by riot to have incredibly bad design built into them, and to avoid running into the problems these champion's failed designs give, they are nerved like hell until they are virtually unusable (or at least publicly unused). This is why a lot of champions and, coincidentally enough, a lot of the older and more poorly designed champions tend to be incredibly unpopular, at least that's my opinion. Bad design leads to bad balance, so Rito shoots their kneecaps until an eventual rework in the future.

As for Galio specifically, the biggest problem with Galio is how he's supposed to be able to position himself properly. In this metagame where mobility is prized and mobility restricting CC is key to control a battle, Galio has so many problems trying to actually get himself into an optimal place due to the fact that his main gap closer is a negligible one track speed boost. This is, unless you plan on using Flash->Ultimate for your initiation, but then you just burned flash.

I think he was kind of pushed out of mid once people started taking AD casters into the mid lane. Now I could be wrong 'cause I haven't been playing all too long so don't quote me on that.

However during a free week I did try out Galio as a support and loved his shield for engages. It makes your ADC so tanky while giving you health back and his ult is pretty useful in the bot lane.

There are a few factors. First is the metagame and flavor of the month as well as the geographical opinions on certain champs. Second is the availability of champions that do what other champions do better/more effectively/more often Third is the like-ability of the champion as in, how entertaining they are to play/ how interesting their voice actor or model are. Nobody plays Yorick, and he's sleeper OP, in my opinion.

etc etc You could list reasons all day.

Galio makes a good support and works great whenever I use him... a true beast on ARAM as well.

The thing is hes just missing that fun factor that make you want to use him over and over again...

If I could make any changes it would be to his ult to make it more like Maokai , so hes more important leading his team into battle (hes a tank so should engage). Currently when I use him I don't run into battle till the end were my ult maybe able to get me a kill. Hes not a fighter and has good long range attacks and a ok shield.

No Mobility = less played

No hard cc = less played

Boring point and click damage abilites = less played

Outdated and appealing visuals = less played.
