Ryze Rework?

How are you supposed to rework Ryze? The perma root is the complete opposite of counterplay. I love playing Ryze, and honestly his level 6 powerspike is just retarded. He can 100-0 you with a Cataylst and Tear. Yes, he is actually difficult to play, he doesn't just flat out faceroll. If you have an immobile machine gun mage, how is that mage supposed to kill someone without self peel? Perhaps nerfing his insane level 6 powerspike would help. I just can't see him working without his W/snare.

Ryze does have counterplay. His early game is EXTREMELY weak. Disables/knockups destroy him. He has hard counters, and he can counter others hard. Champions like Gnar, Cho'Gath, heavy CC/mobile opponents can survive Ryze's onslaught and make him pay for face rolling.
