So i recently made an account on EU West. Here is my rather SHOCKING discovery...

First of all i am posting this on NA boards because for some reason Riot has 100 boards but NA seems most active to me, so it is probably the best way to get message across. Also because people that know english are here and are generaly less toxic then EU.

So here is the deal, 3 days ago I made a smurf account on EU West server. The thing is I have 40-42 ms on EU West server while on EUNE I have 50-60 ms. So immidiately I go well this is not real now is it I have been autoplaced into EUNE for better connection right? But then I notice how commands are much more fluid and better and I realize that client is not wrong.

Then I do a bit of research, and find out that once EU server split you usualy got put into a server which housed your country. And therefore every account made since then would be auto-put there. Apperently as Riot said because you would get better connection there.

Now i had been playing LoL for 4 seasons now and I thought since my account is in EUNE server that meant my computer/me was supposed to be closer to the main server then EU West. So i do a bit of research and I find out EUNE server is hosted in Berlin or Frankfurt in Germany(different sites different info) while EU West server is hosted in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Then I get into Google Maps, do a few calculations and find out my home is about 1540km away from EU West, while only 1150km from EUNE. Now given the fact my tools and calculations will still be a bit off lets just say data has to travel 400km more to EU West then it has to EUNE.

Do you realize what this means? This means we have a server which is really neglected. So much that even while being 400km closer to me it still performs worse then the EU West. And that is not taking into consideration that EU West has more then double active players then EUNE.

I am sure that Riot has been putting more money into the connection of EUW, as there are most likely more people that play League there

I'm guessing it's mostly to do with western Europe's internet infrastructure being way better than eastern Europe's.

How your ISP handles routing of traffic affects your ping as well.

I'm in the UK. EUW Servers are in Amsterdam.

From my Location (Birmingham) to Amsterdam it is approximately 467.8 miles (752 km).

I've been with 2 different ISP's since joining LoL.

When I was with Virgin Media my average ping on EUW was 31 - 40 ms.

Since switching ISP to Sky in February 2017 my ping is 21-22 ms at all times of the day.

Sky's traffic goes through the BT Network which seems to produce lower pings for gaming.

I created an account on the RU server (wanted to learn russian a bit and learning while also playing it on a russian server might help a bit. I memorized the word for legendary at least xD) and I get better ping to the RU servers than I get to EUW. I'm from western Austria...

There was a time where we would move to EUNE because EUW was a horrenderous server.( pretty much was down 10% of the season or was unplayable )

I live in Norway where Eune is supposed to be a home server, but most of the time Eune has the same ping or even worse then EUW
