Variety in competitive botlanes
While this year's Worlds have seen decent variety in terms of champions picked (especially if compared with previous years), unfortunately the ADC position has been plagued with (an expected) Kai'sa and Xayah dominance. I want to discuss why I believe two ADCs have become the only ones playable.
The Kai'sa problem: in my opinion, the issue is deeply rooted within her kit. She is, simply put, overloaded and generic: she can do everything you'd want from an ADC, better than any other ADC. This is a fundamental design flaw that any professional should be wary to avoid. She is flat out better than the competition, and thus crowds out a number of her colleagues. In fact, she exihbits immense pickrates both in pub and pro. She's also not percieved as an unfair champion, for her banrate in pub is low, nor she's percieved as a strategic choice, for her banrate is low in competitive. She fits in every composition, does well in every situation, and is very strong at all stages of the game.
The Xayah problem: while the bird girl is arguably overtuned, she has a definite strategic niche that makes her invaluable in competitive, and less so in soloq; it's not a case that she has 3 times Kai'sa banrate at worlds. Xayah has a purpose as a pick, and while she might not be highly specialized, but her design intends her to do certain things other ADCs can't. She is so contested because of the "Tham Kench curse": she has a built-in denial button that is immense in this neverending damage meta. Nothing happened to Tham, the meta changed around him and he suddenly found himself a staple in competitive.
Proposed solutions: Xayah is very likely to fall back into normality with some simple number nerfs; if we want to end this two-years-long Kai'sa omnipresence in both solo and competitive, serious design work is needed, and it won't be pleasant for her mains.
