Balancing Veigar into a healthy Mage
Hi guys, my name is PickleBabah and I have played Veigar on and off since S2, but not as of late considering the DFG removal (which I normally didn't buy anyway).I want to discuss a couple things concerning Veigar's kit, and how to keep Veigar a healthy mage.
First, we need to discuss who Veigar is, to keep him true to his personality. In lore, he is one of the most powerful Mages in Runterra. He is also insane, and wishes to bring people down to their knees. Also, his quotes and his lore suggest that he enjoys others' suffering. Veigar, in game, The Tiny Master of Evil is definitely infamous for instagibbing. He is also known for an obscure early game with increasing potential as the game progresses. Okay, so now we need to identify values. Things we can all agree on:
- Event Horizon (E) is a very powerful for a non-ultimate ability considering it is an instant stun for 2.5s at max rank.
- Veigar could instagib anyone with DFG / Veigar can instagib most champions without DFG
- Hitting Event Horizon is crucial to hitting Dark Matter
So what is wrong with Veigar? Things we can all agree on:
- Event Horizon does not allow for a lot of counterplay, except for Veigar's movement patterns.
- Getting hit by Event Horizon generally leads to death.
How do we fix this? Rito's approach was to put a .75 second delay on Event Horizon, turn Baleful Strike into a skillshot that stops on the first unit, and reduce Primordial Burst's AP ratio by 0.2.
I do not think this is the right approach. There are many ways to justify this nerf because of how Baleful Strike now can farm 2 at a time and such, so Ult wasn't hit hard. But what it really boils down to is his Event Horizon change. What Veigar turned into is a situational farming champion that relies on jungle fights to land his Event Horizon, making him very weak in lane. This somewhat makes sense because of the idea that he should progressively become strong and thus should not be anywhere near instagib levels during the laning phase, but it taxes himself even if he attempts to capitalize on the enemies' mistakes due to the inability to do so.
But to revert the Event Horizon nerf, I do not think is the viable way to truly balance Veigar either. Event Horizon is very powerful, and needs some form of turning it into less than what it is. The only way to do this without hurting Veigar's overall stature is to compensate the rest of his kit. Rito also approached this by improving his Q. It's not a bad approach, but the main reason that Event Horizon exists is because of Dark Matter. For Event Horizon to be the way it is with the delay, Dark Matter needs a change as well. With the current delay time, he can't really do what he needs to against squishies. If you put a champion in the center of the Event Horizon and have him be walking the entire time to get out of the cage, most likely the champion in the center will not be stunned.
My ideas: Proposal #1: Buff Event Horizon's delay a. Reduce Event Horizon's delay from .75 to .5 b. Everything else will be the same
Proposal #2: Buff Event Horizon before the delay a. Keep Event Horizon's delay at .75, but slow for the delay time by a high percentage b. Everything else will be the same
Proposal #3: Balance out the entire kit into a less E-W reliant champion a.Q: Baleful Strike is now Ablation. -Ablation: Range is reduced from 850 to 550. Pierces and stops on the second unit hit, and gains 400 more range if it hits a unit first. Upon hitting the second unit, deal damage in a circle (~275 radius). If the second unit directly hit is a champion, increase the damage that champion takes. Damage slightly increased, but deals less damage to minions. Mana and Cooldowns are increased. Gains AP the same way live does.
- (Ablation is related to space so yeah) This will make his Q more similar to his Dark Matter, making his kit a bit more balanced out. b.W: Dark Matter is now toned down in several areas. -Delay is now .625 seconds (same as Cho'gath's rupture) -Ratio is toned down from 1.0 to .8 - .6. c. E: Event Horizon has a delay. d. Overall: Now, Veigar will be neither as reliant on either damaging spell and still be capable of AoE in a team fight while still having his farming potential at bay.
So those are my ideas. I think that this is a very important topic not only because of Veigar, but it will most likely project the outcome of further reworks with champions. To perfect and optimize a champion into what is best for the game, we have to apply both the thought of Rito and the community. Thank you for reading.
