Radical Stats and Itemization Idea
Alright, so we all know that Riot is constantly tweaking itemization with (in my humble opinion) not so great results. There are so many items that never see use, even if they have cool effects, because other items offer raw stats that players feel give more oomph. The actual effectiveness of these items varies. When is the last time you saw anyone actually build Ohmwrecker or Zeke's Herald?
Further, there are some champions who's stat requirements are just plain awkward to build (looking at you, Shen). Sometimes, there just isn't an effective item that provides what you need for a given game. There's also the problem of items designed for support or jungle players that either become so effective that other roles build them too (Cinderhulk) or else not effective enough to feel good using (Magus). Riot could create several dozen items with every conceivable niche and stat spread, but balancing them would be a nightmare, and players would still most likely go for raw stats over utility.
Therefore, what I am proposing is that Riot separate stats from items entirely. Players should buy their stats directly with gold, and items should only have their unique effects.
This would allow players to customize the stats they want to build independent of itemization, and allow the creation of items with more interesting effects without having to worry about stat balance or what kind of champ they would be bought with. For example, Zhonya's would be bought purely for the active. Trinity Force would only need it's empowered strike.
Some stats, like armor and magic penetration, could still be limited to item effects. Furthermore, champions would have less need to be balanced around items.
What do you all think? Too crazy? Unbalanceable? Genius?
