Question About Items

For the longest time I haven't put in as much effort as I should of to want to 'get good'. Since I'm starting off relatively at the same level of an incredibly mediocre bronze IV level player, and I would like to start wrapping my head around items and matchups. Would it be a solid idea to start off by understanding items relevant to my main champion along with their matchups?
