5.10 Ryze Too strong and too weak at the same time

I've been maining ryze since 5.10 and here are my thoughts on his current situation.

  1. There is no good reason to build ap items. (except void staff)

Roa will always give you the most damage and tankiness compared to other hybrid items.

Items like zhonyas and abysall give very little damage and possibly less defensive stats than ROA. Items like FH give almost no damage and are imo not worth building since you don't need CDR. I would rather build a Randuin's omen or Thornmail.

Here are the stats on ROA: 80 damage to Q (this includes the ap gains from seraphs) 650 health 52 shield for your passive even more shield towards seraphs. 120 AP item: 66 damage on Q

Why would you build anything else 702 guaranteed health and more damage than 120 ap items. Ryze now has even less options. The old '1 build' has almost become '1 item'

  2. Ryze is a badass dueler.

I've played ryze top and mid and he can beat pretty much anyone 1v1 once you know how to use his passive effectively. He completely out damages anyone and can even 2v1 when a jungler ganks if he has 3-4 passive stacks.

  3. Ryze is not that useful in team fights and succeeds better at split pushing and making 2+ people stop him even though he can't take towers fast...

No matter how well I do, go 4-0 in lane, team fights makes me end up something like 6-8. Aoe cc's, slows, knockups, a thresh hook, people flashing out, any of these is enough to make your passive run out and then the fight is lost before your next passive is stacked.

  4. Relying on his passive too much, ryze can be ridiculously strong and ridiculously weak and cannot press his advantage even when far ahead without passive.

The main error people make when playing vs ryze is dueling him and trying to bully him because he has such a low winrate. But that is when ryze wins. If your opponent has played the new ryze. He knows all he has to do is watch your stack and never duel you, and wait for team fights where it is easy to stop you. In these games, you can't do much as if you try to force a duel you are prone to jungle ganks. As mentioned in the previous section, ryze is just too prone to cc when he has 6 seconds to do anything and everything.

Currently the most success I've had is going Sorc Shoes, ROA, ROA, Seraphs, and 2 defensive items. Banshees, Thornmail, Randuins, GA, or Void Staff vs many tanks

I just feel like ryze didn't turn out how he was meant to with his new kit, but I will keep playing him and trying.

TL;DR Ryze is just too strong and too weak at the same time, and relies more on his opponents not knowing how to play vs him rather than him being good. AP items, and hybrid items aren't worth building over ROA, which leaves him with 2 item choices: ROA and pure defensive items. (and situational void staff) Ryze is too prone vs cc and mobility because he has 6 seconds to work with.

I actually think it's good that Ryze is too strong and too weak at the same time. That really brings him back to where he is supposed to be. Alex Ich once said that "Ryze is both the easiest and hardest champion to play". This was back in Season 2 or 3. But he was talking about how Ryze had no skillshots so he was from a technical standpoint, easy, but his short range, weak early game, and proneness to CC made him effectively difficult to play. Right now, Ryze's passive is where his power comes from, when it's off he's weak, but when it's on, IT'S ON. Maybe too much of "Ryze" is loaded into his passive, but his passive is almost never down lategame. But as you said, CC is still a killer on Ryze and it's what makes his teamfighting seem lackluster. The way I see it though, he has more potential than most mages in a teamfight. If you can avoid major CC and follow up on your teammates, Ryze can provide the most damage and 3 snares througout a teamfight. His positioning has never been more important, and I think Merc Treads are a must on him in most games, but I really think he is incredibly strong in the right hands. But at the same time, Ryze is very weak because he is very vulnerable to hard CC and being kited.

As far as Ryze's build being reduced to 2 items item 3027 item 3070 I think it's brilliant. Ryze was notorious for having one build, but now he has freedom. I was really liking Luden's Echo on him for the MS and how easily Ryze can proc the Passive. With Luden's getting nerfed in the next patch (possibly), I'm not sure if it is worth it anymore. It would probably be better to run Deathcap or another RoA now. I want to try a pure tank build after RoA (possibly getting Seraph's) to see how that works out, but I feel like you miss out on making use of Ryze's Ult to spell vamp which is nearly always up if you manage your passive well.

The thing I love about new Ryze is that he is new ground. People are still trying to figure out what his optimum build is and I love it. I'm sure it will show up at some point, but right now, everyone can come up with a novel build for him to see what works best on him and in what situation. So many champions seem to have a "standard build" that doesn't stray too far from what people have deemed optimum, (there are some champs with off builds like AP Nasus or AD TF, but that's not what I'm talking about right now). Ryze still hasn't found his standard build, and I think it's great. This is my opinion and my thoughts on the matter. Agree or disagree. Comment. Later. Peace.

Haven't played enough to know if you're right, but a valuable assessment for the balance team. I think it's good for them to see how the player's feel even if they disagree, so upvotes for you. Way to keep your thoughts organized and clear.

I agree with most things except that Ryze is strong at splitting but weak at teamfights.

In my experience, he is strong at both, but he is extremely weak against long ranged champions (Lux, Xerath, Ziggs, Orianna, Jinx, Azir...).

Thanks to his W, especially during passive, he is amazing against mobile champions, and he is very valuable for locking down the slippery champions such as Fizz or Kalista.
