ARAM NEEDS a QoL update, here's an idea!

Aram is riot's second most popular gamemode and it has been for a long time. Now SR isn't fun for a lot of us, and I know many players who have quit that aspect of league to join the "fun" in ARAM. Riot has stated before that they refuse to balance ARAM, but what happens when players are sick of both SR and ARAM? They quit league all together.

One change would improve the happiness of all ARAM mains and that would be to make it all random. But alas its too much to ask for. So what now? You can only climb your ARAM mmr by having an account with ARAM dominating champions. Sure there are naysayers, but the fact is it is nearly impossible to carry in this gamemode unless you have one of the following: 1.) A ranged champion 2.) A CC or sustain tank 3.) Some combination of the two, universally oppressive.

What happens in ARAM, the good player(s) on a team get some immobile, pokeless champion with not nearly enough sustain to be a threat for more than one engagement. After this engagement youre stuck with below 50% hp basically running in circles because you have no options. The bad players on your team who have these handicapped champions will simply feed, refuse to build defense, and dive in continuously regardless of the state of their team. You lose the match, decreasing your MMR farther and making it even harder to win games in the future because of these players who either don't take winning seriously or have some gaming deficit.

THE SOLUTION to all these problems that ARAM players face:

A balanced team comp algorithm

When players queue into a match, their team composition is "random" for both sides. The problem with this is it is skewed in favor of the team with less champion diversity. With an ARAM account, your chances of getting a favorable champion is exponentially higher than the chances of a player with a large and diverse champion pool. So here comes the idea of a balanced team comp algorithm.

This means when players queue into a match there are two random variables instead of one.

Variable 1: Each team has an identical, random composition based on ROLE. This is very important because it keeps team balance at a healthy arms length.

Variable 2: Each player receives a random champion dependent on variable 1.


Lets use my last ARAM match as a pure example- My team had vs Their team had Orianna vs Brand Riven vs Miss Fortune Urgot vs Heimerdinger Darius vs Ryze Warwick vs Kayle

Instead of complicating things with subclasses, the role composition of each team were:

Ranged vs Ranged Melee vs Ranged Semi-Melee vs Ranged Melee vs Ranged Melee vs Semi-Ranged

The idea of a balanced team comp algorithm would take these basic champion roles and organize both teams then randomize each champion based on the randomized preselected roles for the match.

So my match would've consisted of a MUCH more balanced: Ranged vs Ranged Melee vs Melee Semi-Melee/Semi-Ranged vs Semi-melee/Semi-Ranged Melee vs Melee Melee vs Melee

alternatively~

Ranged vs Ranged Ranged vs Ranged Ranged vs Ranged Ranged vs Ranged Semi-Melee/Semi-Ranged vs Semi-Melee/Semi-Ranged

It would be simpler than one may think since each champion only needs tobe organized into 1 of 3 basic roles (Ranged, Melee, and Semi)

Once the basic team comps are balanced randomly, now each player gets to play a random champion that are within these guidelines for a much more fun and healthy experience for both sides of the spectrum!

Let me use one final example, putting all variables together:

Variable 1 execution Team comp randomly selected-

Ranged Melee Melee Ranged Semi-Ranged

Variable 2 execution Randomly selected champions on each team with variable 1 guidelines-

Team 1: Varus
Olaf Blitzcrank Corki Kayle

Team 2: Vayne Jax Braum Xerath Gnar

This by no means would solve every problem in ARAM, players would still find themselves in some seemingly unwinnable games. However I believe wholeheartedly that the quality of life of every single ARAM player would improve significantly. There would rarely be a team that cannot do anything for the entire game, being pushed behind their own turret from the start or losing 35 to 10. Riot I hope you take your dedicated ARAM players to heart in some of your future patches, we should be able to play the game how we want to and have fun in the process!
