Whats the difference in normal and ranked mmr?

Is there a large difference in skill between ranked and normal games?

In my normal's i play with a bunch of silvers maybe a gold or plat at some points but not much and in these normal's games most of the time my personal performance i find satisfactory but then i started playing rank. From what i can find from the players in my matches they are similar ranked players i would find in my normal's but for some reason i do horrible against my opponents and always seem to make the wrong call even with my best champions and yet they should be no different in skill of players i faced in normal or at least what appear to be.

I mainly play normal games and i only played 10 ranked games to get my ranked match done but some of my games i felt like i did so poorly that i was wondering whats going on. My team and the other team are doing fine its just me being drowned even with my best champions that would never go below average in performance (at least in comparison to my team)

Any ideas what it could be? am i just really unlucky just for those games? is there something between normal's and rank i don't know? I know its only a couple games but i felt like it was consistent and the players i was facing were definitely more skilled then the ones i faced in normal's.

normals = broken system

ranked = broken system layered ontop of another broken system

There's a separate MMR associated with each game mode, the downside to this being that it's difficult to find where you "rightfully belong" in each category, especially in Ranked where elo-boosting, smurfing, and duo-queue-carrying are prevalent.

The main thing from my experience is the mentality of players. In Ranked, they will generally pick their best champion - someone who they are comfortable with and can carry the game at any point in time rarely having bad matchups. In Normals, it's a large practice mode for getting better and, well, practicing picks that you would bring into Ranked, or having fun. It's not uncommon to see Kindred being brought into lane while Vayne goes and jungles in Normals, however this rarely happens in Ranked, where people's MMR/LP/Rank is on the line.

You'll notice in Ranked that Pings are usually answered much better and Wards/Vision Coverage is much more substantial for your team. This is often times from comfortability of a pick - they are able to assess the situation and understand, both mechanically and mentally, what's going on and how they should play it as they've seen it a million times before. Let's say you main Gangplank and know he's very weak early game and have been punished for it many times before. Placing a ward in the bush at 3:00 might protect you from us filthy junglers a handful of times, and may end up engraved into your memory to do so nearly every match. In Normals, an inexperienced Gangplank may not understand his powerspikes and how slow his Barrels decay early-game, and as such may overestimate his own power or underestimate the gank potential due to "loligotoranges." That's often times why you'll see lots of threads on forums complaining about "DON'T FIRST TIME A CHAMPION IN RANKED" because it's costly to the team and overall affects people's rating - although this is just a game, Ranked is the creme de la creme here and some people take it very seriously. Some aspire to be professional gamers some day and it's very difficult to "carry" a game and climb up the ladder if an enemy champion is busy farming your team like minions.

Don't get so down on yourself for your performance, you seem like a nice person and it's very refreshing to see someone take an introspective position on this rather than flaming their teammates. Keep it up, I'm sure you'll climb to where you want to be! Check out your replays in the client and figure out what you could have done to make a better outcome of each situation, as well as look at your builds compared to what the enemy team has to offer. Even if you go 0/10 on a champion you're comfortable with think of it as a learning experience and try to grab as much knowledge of the situation that you can. Best of luck to you, I look forward to seeing you climb and reading a post from you in the future of "How I got to Challenger." You have a great mentality for a team game!

In ranked the MMR system 'attempts' to be more tight. Meaning there is less fluctuation between team mates and enemies. This doesn't always work out, hence why I hae a loss in my last 14 games, had a bronze ADC in a mid Diamond MMR game.

In normals it doesn't really prioritize making sure the teams are fair,, it prioritizes queue time being somewhat short. According to that whatismymmr website I am in the top 0.44% in Normals for MMR, but because of my queue times I'm still sometimes paired with a Gold or Low plat player.

yes, completely different... normals don't have a meaningful MMR... feels very random

Hello. just read you post. It happens the same to me. What I think is that the game mechanics are different. Some champions are somehow tweaked when you select them for ranked games. This varies from time to time. I think they do this in order to someway force players to play with a predetermined set of champions when going competitive. That is the reason why from one season to another some champions that were powerful then become useless. This besides the normal updates, changes and reworks to the overall game and particular champions. For example Spell "X", Champion "X" has 20 points damage reduction.

Long time ago, despite changes made, you were still able to use a officially "nerfed" champion from a past season in the actual season. Of course those changes made more difficult the use of it but you could still play it in a competitive way. Today that is impossible. As you mentioned, the opponents are the same, the champion are the same, you play the same (most of the time even better than normal games), but the result is a total failure. This is a list of things that I observe that actually happen when moving to ranked with a champion that is not on the actual set of popular champions in use.

  • You start to miss every spell and ability.
  • The enemy suddenly dodges everything.
  • The enemy seems to move a bit faster.
  • You seem to move a bit slower.
  • Farming is harder and takes more time.
  • Compared to normal games, you seem to do a less damage even when carrying same build and runes.

Once again, the level of skill and gameplaying of the opponents is the same or even worse than in normal games. Your gameplaying and skill level is the same and sometimes better than normal games (you took ranked serious). Runes and gear used by you and opponents are the same than in normal games. Champions also are the same, but result is a complete failure. :( But if you choose one of the "season most used champions", nothing of this happens.

I found that in normal games when i use Lux "E", the spell travels faster in normal games and a bit slower in ranked. When using old Morgana it was the same until they reworked her, after that found no difference. I think this is because there are some little hidden changes to some champs when entering ranked mode. Maybe I'm grong, but I dont think that you or I or anybody else that moves from normal to ranked are doing so bad. Neither i think we all have that bad luck of being always matched with the worst teams. Neither if I, and lot of players are able to see that the skill level and quality of ranked games is worse than in normals. I heard from many players that they find normal matches more fun that ranked. Something is happening, and is not us. The game has changed a lot since season 3, and i think is some aspects is not for good.
