Early game Rammus and item build

I know isnt excatally an early game champ but is there a way to play him without getting 6-8 deaths early game(jg). On an unrelated note i am lvl 25 summoner and i am still using recommended item builds. Is that ok or should i change that habbit and if so how? Thanks
