Question about Ping?

Now, earlier in the game I was playing and someone said their ping went up to 80 and cost them the 1v1. I normally play at 80. I live in a very rural area and it's hard to get good internet. I managed to get myself att internet, which was hard enough since they're trying to cancel all their internet in my town. Is that a bad ping to play at? I do fine, really. But everyone keeps telling me "If you had lower ping you'd be so much better than you already are". Does having 40-60 ping compared to 80 really make such a huge difference? I do well, and usually carry in all of my games. I don't see why my ping is making me a worse player right now.

I doubt it would make a huge difference, but it highly depends on what bracket of game you play at. If you want to play at a high level like platinum or diamond it will make a significant difference. Otherwise if you have ping spikes it can be bad, but a consistent 80 won't make a major difference.

Having consistent ping is much more important than having low ping, so someone used to 50 ping spiking to 80 will be suffering more than someone who has a constant 100 ping.

Lower ping is better, particularly for really tight combos (e.g. lee sin insecs, riven combos, etc.), but they have been trying to introduce more buffering to various champions/abilities to limit the impact of ping on peoples ability to combo properly, and for most champions and last hitting and so on you'll get used to the timings and be able to play nearly as effectively as on lower ping since your muscle memory on when you 'should' cast whatever ability or try to last hit will be e.g. 30ms faster than someone with lower ping.

A side effect of this is that if you're used to high ping, and then get to play on lower ping, you may actually do slightly worse at first as you readjust to timings. Once you do adjust it'll likely feel more responsive, but since we're talking about fractions of seconds here it's not a huge deal except at high levels of play.
