The best ability in the game, conceptually

Everyone has that one spell on that one champion that they absolutely love. That, if given the chance, they would gladly build a champion identity around. That they would welcome a champion addition consisting of only that ability, tuned better to compensate, because it's that perfect.

And for me, that's Rakan's Q.

It has everything I want in a Support: A ranged damage ability that rewards aggressiveness and heals both me and my adc. If you could take out the rest of Rakan's kit and buff it all around, (damage, range, cooldown, heal amount) it'd be the perfect champion. Having to wait for my adc or my second target to get into bounce range for Nami's W is not as fun. Sona's mana inefficiency for an on-hit effect that needs to be applied from an unsafe range or her heal that is also a shield that you'll seldom want both effects of at the same time feels punishing. Rakan's Q completely and totally encapsulates what I want out of a new champion. If only Support Vladimir was any good...

What are some champion abilities you guys like conceptually? There's tons of abilities that are simply good, but there are tons more that are great in concept.

Shen's ultimate, Stand United. The reason I got into this champion to begin with.

You're a tank with one hard CC with a relatively high cooldown. You have very mediocre peeling tools, and your ally utility leaves much to be desired. So naturally, you're relagated to top lane, stomping the fool who thought he could beat you with Darius. Then you see an ally is in trouble.

Now, in this situation, most people would go, "Welp, he's dead, another kill for the enemy team." But Shen? No. Shen says "fuck you that's my teammate" and globally puts a shield on them. And he starts his Ionian chanting, letting the dread build up in his opponents. "Oh shit a tanky ninja is-"

But they never finish that thought as you jump the fools who dared mess with YOUR teammate while you were around. Suddenly you turn a gank into a fucking slaughter as your teammate and you beat down on the dudes who were winning just seconds ago. Then, as you let the bodies hit the floor and scream-o internally, you put on your ninja shades, cross your arms, and after typing "gj" in chat you go back top lane with that extra but of tankiness (or damage if you're not worried about rushing Titanic Hydra) to make Darius your bitch.

#The above scenario is how it feels to use Stand United, fellas. Stimulate your senses, boys and girls.

Probably a lot of people will disagree with me on this because it's the opposite of a flashy ability, but Ashe's passive is in my opinion the best designed ability in the game.

Out of all of the abilities in the game it's probably the one that goes the furthest towards defining a champion's playstyle, it removes an element of RNG from the game and it's something you think about both when playing as/against Ashe without being absurdly obnoxious.

I have to go with Jhin's Passive. From the AS calculated into AD part, to the 4 shots part, to the 4th shot part. Even the reload bit I can be down with because of the "when Whisper crits" part. And due to the busted nature of Jhin, even when behind, his shots always seem to really, really hurt like bloody hell.

I think most of Sion's kit is absolutely brilliant design, and I'm going to pick his E for an ability I think is conceptually awesome: it's an ability with two very different functions depending on the game stage Sion is in, and also has very different reliability at those levels as well: in lane, it's a poke ability that lets Sion use the enemy wave against his opponent, and is fairly unreliable due to the emphasis on positioning and aim, at a time when his opponent's forced to be close enough to him to let him use his other basic abilities more reliably. Once the laning phase ends, however, it can still be used as poke, but is generally used for its slow and armor reduction in teamfights, and its mode of application at close ranges becomes more reliable, while the rest of Sion's kit becomes harder to use due to the enemy's freedom of movement and heavy amounts of CC as a group.

It's an ability that's extremely simple, yet incredibly versatile and interactive, and perfectly complements Sion's playstyle even as it evolves to fit different needs along the duration of a match. It gives a few more options to a champion who's otherwise defined very harshly by his range and movement limitations, without undermining those weaknesses or his niche either.

I really liked Null Zone, Malzahar's old W. It was a very powerful combo tool for your ult but could also be used for effective area denial. Sadly, seems like it will never come back.

kled ult is for sure a fun ability. Same with Sion ult.

idk if passives count but

** Whenever an enemy champion dies within 3 seconds of Katarina damaging them, her cooldowns are reduced by 15 seconds.**

she wouldnt be the same champ without it

Sion's ult. Say what you want about how easy it is to counter, but nothing else in this game really fulfills a character's gameplay fantasy better than that ultimate.

Blitzcrank Q but he is already based all around that Q so I main him, fun fact about me, I used to play a lot of dota 2 up until start of 2017 ( I started playing in 2016 DEC iirc and also played a lot of pudge)

PopcornBunni8/1/2017, 3:23:54 AM1 votes

Taliyah's Q. It has such a unique resource mechanic that isn't seen much elsewhere in the game, and it creates a nice tradeoff by not just making the worked ground strictly worst.

The only other mechanic that's similar in the game is Talon's wall jump, but it could easily be applied to other abilities like Illaoi's passive getting a faster refresh but unable to regrow from the same location, or Azir's sand soldiers gaining bonuses for being near their master.

A lot of people will disagree but I love Lux ult.

Makes for so many fun plays.

Mk2Chieftain8/1/2017, 5:20:31 AM1 votes

Many may disagree but I can't help but love the idea of Akali's W. Thematic gold in my opinion but horribly executed and the recent changes make it even more awkward. Personally they should return the cast range and make it a sort of "kill zone" where enemies want to get the hell out of there while Akali becomes a demon inside.

Orianna shockwave because who doesn't love the 3k elo plays

Onandaga8/1/2017, 5:53:19 PM1 votes

Nasus Q tied with Kat passive. It's feels sooo good to gain power from kills.

Other mentions for me would be Nidalee's spears and Teemo's shrooms. Annoying perhaps for the other team but incredibly satisfying to surprise kill a low health enemy with.

Ivern

His shield is by far one of the best support abilities in the game because of his ability to offer both peel and damage in a single ability. And even if the shield kills, the one who has the shield gets the kill, so kill stealing won't be an issue.

Add that with item 3174 the shield can heal for a decent amount, even more so if you take Windspeaker's Blessing with Runic Shield and item 3504/item 3107.

It makes him amazing in all stages of the game as utility is never useless.

Oh and add that with the AP scaling using a item 3041 via assists and item 3027 you become a monster of a healing machine.

Bard Magical Journey man

One of the most interesting mobility spells in the game, you can use it as engage, disengage, rotation speed up, or my personal favorite, the portal bait. nothing is more satisfying than watching a fed Yasuo chase the low health bard and getting stunned into a whole team

Good shit if i do say so.

DorkunedAuras7/31/2017, 9:09:42 PM1 votes

The thing I love most about Rakan's Q is that he doesn't become Soraka, whose whole strategy is to stand really far away and heal her ADC when they get hurt. Rakan has to earn those heals, and you can stop him from getting those by not getting hit.

Personally, my favourite ability in the game is Rek'Sai's Tunnel. I love the sheer versatility that it gives with getting around, bouncing in and out of fights now that it has the 2 second reuse CD at max rank. You can do amazing things with this ability used right. And it's so freaking fun.

Allein Dovienya7/31/2017, 9:52:56 PM1 votes

I have two candidates.

First, Rakan's E. It shows what a "Mobile Support" really is. Dash to someone and shield them. Not just shield, like you're Nami or Lulu. Not just a dash-to-ally, like any number of champions. It's even more than a Braum-jump, in that it also causes you to get in the way of skillshots if you do it right.

Zoom, hi, I'm Rakan, you're shielded and I'm eating that incoming Thresh hook. Any questions?

(The second dash is just gravy)

But really, the winner in my eyes for "Ability that encapsulates what I want in League" is Soraka's ultimate, Wish.

Jungler ganked your mid lane and your mid is going to die with both enemies on a sliver of health? Nope.

Top laner losing a fight that they picked (unwisely) and nobody on your team is close enough to help them? Nope.

Your own health is too low to top up your suicidal ADC, who is going in against a fed Draven/Blitz with their jungler nearby, and you need to save their self-harming self? Wish has that too.

Drynin7/31/2017, 10:48:56 PM1 votes

Draven's Spinning Axe.

There is so much to this one thing that is relatively simple in its execution. "While it's up, you get more damage on attack. And here's a clear way to get it up again." But the depth that has created and complexity with playing him is so much fun to watch. A poor low elo player like myself watches a pro play him and just constantly catching those axes no matter what and dishing out disgusting damage. So you feel like you should practice it, and you do, and you face plant, and keep face planting.

But eventually, you get that one great fight where you caught your axe 10 times, and killed 3 enemies in a 4v2 bot gank, and suddenly you feel hardcore and satisfied.

Chaos Milk Tea7/31/2017, 10:59:50 PM1 votes

Orianna's q is so smart and simple. You could base a whole champion around it.

Oh

Azureee7/31/2017, 11:04:02 PM1 votes

Camille ult. I can actually get to surprise, pick off and burst the fed carry that the other lanes have overfed. Best champ by far.

LightIsMyPath7/31/2017, 11:09:14 PM1 votes

I like the concept of Nami W. It's quite similar to the one of Rakan Q but nami's feel better to use to me because both the harm to enemies and the heal to ally are happening almost at the same time and you can control which one you need more. I dream of a champion with that concept in his ultimate, allowing to affect all 10 players in the area with either heals or damage being able to empower the one or the other.

zero3568/1/2017, 12:25:24 AM1 votes

Irelia's ult because it best sums up being a telekinetic blade wielder, which is what she's supposed to be

Bard Ult. I don't really like the ability for the ability, but because it affects allies and enemies the same. I think it would be interesting to build an entire kit around abilities doing the same thing for friend and foe

Sion Ult. I want a champion with some smaller version of that as a passive with all of the abilities playing off of it. Yes, he runs at your for CC and damage. BUT HE CAN'T STOP RUNNING.

Anivia wall. I started playing another game recently (master x master, would recommend, it's free and new) and they basically put this ability on a tank. That I play. And I love it. Easily the best way to screw over enemies and it is glorious. I don't think I'd build a kit around it, though. Area control in general maybe.

And shameless plug, I had an idea for reworking Irelia's kit around her R, if in anyone's interested: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/n1Z4zzzy-irelia-rework-idea
