What champions to play?

Recently I played two matches in Top Lane, one as Garen, and another as Malphite. Both of these champions are honestly only good for tanking and their ult(basically but not completely). Anyway, I feel like I'm not helping my team enough in games and we end up loosing when I play these champions top. So I'm wondering what are some good champions at the moment that can help carry? It just seems like my teams aren't doing enough damage, we get everyone low but if we just had a little more damage then we can win ganks. Obviously picking counters during champ select helps but I did counter when I picked Malph against Tryndamere, and I played Garen against Wukong but these counters weren't game changing or anything.
