Solo Queue is as much about attitude as it is about skill

This thread is in direct contrast to the one found here, however I think it is worthy of it's own space for discussion. I have written a number of previous threads in regards to trolls which can be found at the bottom of this thread.

I'd like to acknowledge the frustration of having AFK teammates. It sucks, it's unfair, and it can lead to a loss. But having a rule that would shorten surrender time would negatively affect the game. A lot. I like to run experiments while I play. I do it with trolls, normal players, pretty much everyone. Then sometimes I'll report my findings on here or just use them to benefit myself. Everything below is my personal findings.

  1. Being positive is the best thing you can do for a team. The most common issue I find when a team is down kills is demotivation. If I remain positive and encourage my teammates, "we can win this", pointing out objectives, warding, etc. Giving them something to do will drastically increase their morale, especially with smaller tasks. Recommending build changes for future games, but being positive about it, is also a great thing to do. It provides a path for said individual to focus their strengths AND tells them you don't (entirely) fault their mechanics/skills. I see "WOW SH*T BUILD <champion>" way too often.

  2. People who vote to surrender infuriate me. Why might you ask? Because I joined a game with the lead objective being winning, but also to hone my skills, achieve ____ cs, take ___ objective first, land _____ skillshots, place _____ wards, etc. If you surrender not only do I lose the game but I don't gain ANYTHING from that game. If I can turn the game into a potential loss but also an opportunity for me to hone specific skills it adds worth to the time I spent in the game.

  3. Quitting is a waste of time. It's much better to continue playing and working with your champions mechanics than to quit. League is all about improving, so if you surrender every time you're losing significantly you throw out 15-35 minutes off free practice. If you're playing League with an "all or nothing" mindset, you're playing the wrong game.

  4. Reducing surrender time will only encourage people to surrender early.

> Personal experience: > On Monday I was on a losing streak and was 1 game from demotion. I knew I needed to win that game, but our Jax was AFK from the start. I just told my team "eh, dont worry about it" and they didn't. Each one of them won their lane by a ton (we had a missing JG, match history here) and we won the game despite being down a player. When my top laner started complaining "ugh, afk jax" when he died twice in a row I asked mid to go up and help him out. I told them "we don't need jax, he doesn't even compliment our team comp", and we didn't. > > This isn't even a rare occurence. I'd say 80% of the games I come back from a loss it's because I worked to boost the morale of my team and encourage specific plays. Getting angry or surrendering is one of the most pathetic thing's I've seen in this game.

There are other stories but I have to run. I might include them here later, but I'd like to hear what you guys think. Sorry about the crap formatting, I do that last and I don't have time. Will edit in an hour-ish~

I agree. While not as extreme as your example, I have similar experiences even recently.

Orianna feeds LB multiple times and Darius dies to Riven FB. All my ganks fail. Uh oh. Orianna was saying "gg" "ff 20" since 15 minutes.

One double TP countergank 4v3 at dragon turned it all around. From then on, it was all downhill for the enemy team. We never fought in the open where they could get away with their squishy carries; we always fought in the jungle and river and especially locations with walls that Riven couldn't jump. Darius scores a triple in a jungle fight, and we push it for the snowballing ace and win.

This argument doesn't disagree with surrendering early, it disagrees with surrendering at all.

Here's a fact: Quitting and requeueing is no more a waste of time than continuing to play is. You can practice whatever you want to practice in another match.

All you are doing by not surrendering is making your team continue to play with each other, which they already clearly hate. Now, if you can diffuse the situation, that's great. Most of the time, though, there are going to be 2 or 3 people that are just irreparably discouraged and miserable. Stop antagonizing us. When no one wants to play, the game may as well be lost.
