Secondary Role Incentives
I recently gave a post to a riot employee about the current state of secondary vs primary roles in my ranked games. Here is the message. (me crying about support all the time)
"I am experiencing a lack of variety when given roles in ranked que. To be specific I select Mid primary and Support Secondary and in the past nine games I have been support every single time and over 20 games I have gotten my primary role only 25% of the time. I do understand that support is not a popular role and that they are in demand for creating games at higher elos but having to do a secondary role a majority of the time is frankly quite frustrating. Supporting game after game is not enjoyable and impacts my performance. I would try and fix this by refusing to support and playing top, as a secondary role, but my supporting is significantly better than my top lane and would not be doing justice to my teammates. In short it would be nice to get a primary role at about 50% of the time, even if my secondary role is support. That number seems reasonable to me but may not be realistic. This may bring light to a larger issue about support in general and how it is significantly less enjoyable or influential than other roles. Thank you for reading my concerns and I hope it leads to some change in the future.

The riot staff member politely responded to me and and told me that suggestions would be looked at on the forums so that is the source that is post comes from.
I came up with two ideas. The first was an idea would limit the amount of times you could be placed into champion select with the same secondary role, for example someone playing three matches as secondary top would guarantee their next game would be there primary jungle role. A second addition would be that you must actually get into the game with that primary role because of que dodgers. This has happened to me and I was placed in my secondary role in the next champion select. I looked at this and decided this would have a significant negative impact on que times and that is just replacing one problem with another problem that riot also wants to correct and may even be a worse problem. My second idea was that players who do not receive their primary role are are given a reward for doing so. Suggestions for this are an added IP, RP, or LP incentive for playing a role that is secondary or autofilled. Possibly even increasing the reward for players who chose the most unpopular role(s) Eg: supporting. This would also apply to losses as well, but that would mean the LP incentive would change to losing less LP. I see this as a very good solution because this would give an incentive that encourages players to pick less popular roles and decrease que times and since these are virtual rewards the cost of riot giving them to players is extremely low. Personally I do not think the IP reward is the correct option because the incentive is very weak in my opinion but I have only my personal evidence to back that up, it may work in practice. I look at secondary roles as a semi sacrifice just to get into a game and I think rewarding people sacrificing their primary roles is positive for the community, on top of summoners sacrificing their enjoyment for teammates. "But M2K what about people who have primary roles that are not popular, they should get benefits too" No, you are already getting your primary role and not sacrificing anything significant besides the lives protecting your adc :^). (Just in case that argument pops up).
Thanks for reading if you have not already heard or thought of this before. If I stole your ideas I am sorry, I just want to make sure people know about this. -Sincerely, Frostbirrage
