Something I've been wondering

I've recently been wondering why Ryze all of a sudden is being played more. He's even starting to get banned a decent amount if you look at champ bans. Is it because RoA is good now? Because Faker played him? Because he just holds you down and ****s you hard come late game? I've heard some reasons, but I'm still lacking a concrete answer.
